✨ The Golden Hour:
Why the First 60 Minutes After Birth Are So Important!! ✨

The first hour after birth (often called the Golden Hour) is more than just a beautiful bonding moment. It’s a crucial time that sets the stage for baby’s health and well-being. Uninterrupted skin-to-skin contact during this time has incredible benefits:

🍼 More Successful Breastfeeding:
Babies who have skin-to-skin contact are more likely to latch effectively, and studies show this early connection can increase exclusive breastfeeding rates by 50% at six weeks postpartum.

💖 Stabilizes Baby’s Body & Lowers Stress:
Holding baby close helps regulate temperature, breathing, and heart rate, reducing stress hormones in both baby and parent. It also releases oxytocin, which promotes bonding and lowers postpartum depression risks.

🍬 Balances Blood Sugar Levels:
The transition from womb to world can cause dips in a baby’s blood sugar. Skin-to-skin contact helps keep glucose levels stable, reducing the risk of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), especially in babies born to parents with gestational diabetes.

🦠 Strengthens Immunity:
Baby picks up healthy bacteria from the parent’s skin, which helps develop a strong immune system from birth.

😢 Less Crying, More Comfort:
Studies show that newborns held skin-to-skin cry 67% less than those placed in a crib.

The Golden Hour isn’t just a recommendation, it’s backed by research and has long-term benefits for both baby and parent. Whenever possible, advocate for uninterrupted skin-to-skin time after birth. These first moments matter. 💛

Feel the force that is you and never apologise for it. Your birth team is there for you not the other way around. Remember you are the one who is in control even when you feel out of control. If you don't like something we can change it. Labour is full of adaptability. What works one moment might not work the next and that's okay.
The most important thing in that birthing space is you and how your body is feeling.

I think this cycle needs to be talked about more. More often then not fear drives women to making fast decisions in labor. Decisions they may come to regret later or that weren’t one of their birth preferences. Their mind turns to fear as the intensity of labor progresses, causing their body to tense up and in turn result in more pain until finally they plead for relief of such pain. When you let everything fall away, including the fear. Your body understands it can relax in between contractions, relieving your muscles of their fatigue, letting go of everything except your breath. Fear can be a good thing in life. It helps us stay safe and aware in dangerous situations but it doesn’t have a place in labor. In some cases it can even stall labor ! Try to surrender to the moment. Take one contraction at a time, breathing through each one until finally your baby is on your chest crying like a banshee.

Recently I've been meeting a lot of people who don't know what a labor doula does and why families need/want them. It's so funny because you really don't need to know unless you're needing one yourself, so our little world is very tight knit because it's so niche. I love it though. The feeling of teaching someone about this world, seeing their face when they realize how much of an impact we make with women. opening their eyes to new possibilities (when they decide to have kids)
'Well now I know I'm going to need a doula when we have kids, you've sold me!' Hearing those words from a woman I met at an anniversary party made my heart warm and adrenaline sky rocket. I was up till 3 am that night so jazzed by my conversations with people it was like I drank three coffees at once!
I love that I got into this, and love where I plan on going with it.
And even though I'm still new and small,
every conversation,
every client,
they make me feel like I'm making a difference.

Some day I hope to make more than a difference
but a dent in the care women deserve!

Like so many things in life there's controversy on whether having a doula during labor is a luxury or a need. If it's really something you should spend your money on, or if you should focus on so many other baby related things.
Some people hear I wanted a doula or now am a doula and they look at me with an odd expression, like I'm crazy for even thinking people would want my services.
It's funny to me because there are so many studies out there now that show the benefits of having a doula. Short term & Long term.
Personally I believe having a labor doula should be part of all prenatal care, just not a private service. Every birthing person should have that kind of support.

Though I guess I'm a little biased.

These are my goals as a labor doula now and my future goals as a labor & postpartum doula.

My end goal is to help families with their breastfeeding journeys.

That is my passion.

I went through a lot of struggles with all three of my babies and I found out that in northern Alberta there isn't as much support for breastfeeding mamas as one might think.
That in itself, can lead to fewer babies being breastfed and that doesn't sit well with me.
If you don't want to breastfeed or have medical reasons or any other reason other than lack of support, that's fine, that's your choice based on your life. No one should judge you for that.

But the fact that many women have to stop breastfeeding/or can't even begin because of LACK OF SUPPORT is wrong.

This needs to change!

Women need more support PERIOD. More lactation support, more mental health support, more prenatal and postnatal support!

There's a misconception that pregnancy and birth can't happen unless you're in the hospital with a doctor. This simply isn't true.

Now of course there are times when doctors need to step in and assist with medical intervention, and that is amazing. The fact that we have the resources and technology where these life saving things can be performed, is incredible.
But generally, pregnancy & birth are both events that take their course and we just need to be there to support the birthing mother in her journey. Her body knows what to do, just sit back, support and enjoy witnessing that amazing moment.

Having your first baby is a very special time. You're experiencing everything for the first time. The pregnancy, the appointments and ultrasounds, the body changes, the emotions, the labor pains, the birth, everything is new and opens your eyes for future pregnancies and childbirths.
The first pregnancy and birth experience can make you want more pregnancies or make you feel scared and unsure about more children.

One thing that helped me to gain perspective is when my doula sent me an article. In it they talked about how pregnancy & birth is a ‘right of passage’ for women. The labor pains are not something to fear but something you have to go through to bring a baby into the world.
Just like many accomplishments you may achieve in your life, a career, buying a new house, getting married, etc, all those things require hard work.
It’s the same for bringing a baby into the world.
It takes WORK!
After all the nausea, the round ligament pains, the kicking, the trouble breathing and walking, the labor pains, the pushing, you and only you get the reward of delivering your baby.
That is a huge and for some, the biggest accomplishment you have ever/will ever do.

You go into labor being a daughter and come out being a mother.

That is power. That is strength. That is your right of passage.
That is your accomplishment and no one can take that away from you!

Cascade of interventions, refers to a phenomenon that can occur during childbirth where one medical intervention leads to a chain of subsequent interventions. It happens when an initial intervention - often intended to address a particular issue or complication- triggers a series of additional interventions that may not have been necessary otherwise.
This is something to be aware of when your birth vision is more focused on natural labor. If you have to have an intervention, it’s best to wait as long as you can, so there is less risk of the cascade happening. Starting your labor off with an intervention increases your risk of needing subsequent interventions later on.
For labors that need induction, there are other alternatives that can give you the same result with no medical intervention required, such as acupuncture.
Make sure to discuss everything with your care provider first.
