Reproductive experiences cannot be placed in simple boxes - they are as diverse as the people going through them. For nonbinary and gender-diverse individuals, these experiences often come with their own set of unique challenges, but also with strength, resilience and beauty.

The truth is, every person’s journey through pregnancy, birth and postpartum is deeply personal and different. No two experiences are the same. The care and support people need should reflect that diversity. It's not just about making space for different identities; it's about making sure that care feels like it was made for you - without assumptions or expectations about what your experience "should" look like.

As a nonbinary birthworker, I see you. While there are certainly challenges, let’s not forget the power and beauty. There is incredible opportunity to reclaim space, feel empowered in our bodies and connect with our truth in ways that are deeply affirming. You are resilient. You are capable. Your journey is a testament to your strength and you have everything within you to thrive through it.

There is a culture shift that needs to change, and I know it is Canada wide, as well as North America wide and worldwide.

Just because you walk into a hospital for your birth =/= consent to cohorse.
Just because you walk into a hospital for your birth =/= consent for medical assistance such as cervical checks, application of the heart monitors, or medical procedures. This includes episiotomies, having the medical professionals fingers in or around your babies head to "help" with delivery or applying an international fetal monitor
Just because you walk into a hospital for your birth =/= consent to the hospital staff over seeing procedures vs. your midwife offering medical support such as catheter application
Just because you walk into a hospital for your birth =/= that because you agreed once before (to be touched, assisted, or multimanaged) that the staff can do this again. Consent must be obtained consistently.

What a beautiful, empowering experience ❤️

For the first time in over 60 years, a baby was born on Kehewin Cree Nation last month thanks to a midwifery program that is the first of its kind in a First Nation in Alberta.

In the early hours of April 5, Maelan Simaganis-Tsatoke started to feel contractions, but she was in Edmonton, far from her home in Kehewin, 240 kilometres east of the city.

She decided to drive nearly three hours back to the First Nation.

"I just knew that I wanted our family there, community," said Simaganis-Tsatoke, who is originally from Poundmaker First Nation in Saskatchewan.

"It was like a dream, honestly, to have that experience."

By the time Simaganis-Tsatoke arrived, a makeshift birthing centre had been set up in a space that was formerly a daycare.

What made this birth different is that it was a traditional birth, incorporating Cree songs, smudging, and a fire burning outside. Kokums — or grandmothers — played a key role.

"Every contraction I had somebody holding me and when they got stronger, my cousin Jada was singing to me," said Simaganis-Tsatoke.

"It just helped ground me and it was just a really beautiful experience. And to have the kokums smudging me, praying for me, I just loved it. It was so beautiful."
