September is Arthritis Awareness Month. According to Arthritis Society Canada, 1 in 5 Canadians live with arthritis, a collection of conditions affecting joints and other tissues. It causes pain, restricts mobility and diminishes quality of life.

Arthritis can be caused by underlying health problems, long-term repetitive activity (e.g. desk work), or simply the anatomy of the wrist.

A lot of us have an intellectual understanding of fascia in the body. Only when working through layers of tissue on cadavers does one gain a full appreciation of the sheer magnitude. Our muscular connections are practically an afterthought. Structurally speaking, fascia definitely rules the day.

Any exercise regardless of how "functional" or "non-functional" it looks, if it's improving someone's movement experience it's a "functional" exercise.

If someone is feeling restricted at their ribcage, making it more difficult to rotate their torso, I might give them some rib mobility exercises that they can do themselves.

There's nothing "functional" in how these exercises look however, many times it can improve how someone feels as they rotate.

If they feel better they'll move more.

Moving more over time will increase their mobility and help restore the ability to more effortlessly rotate the torso which is an everyday movement in walking or turning.

Any small stepping stone that builds the individual's capacity to function better in daily life or in their sport is functional.

Improve their experience, improve their capacity to function.

When we "elongate" a tissue it's more a change in the angles of the collagen fibers than a genuine change in length.

This is a useful protective mechanism to reduce the risk of injury. In many ways the body is an anti-stretch organism.

We can change tissue size and length but this takes time and progressive loading.

In the moment, a change in body shape comes from a change in the geometry of our tissues.
