It's believed that Alexander the Great sent his army from Greece to an island off the coast of Somalia for the sole purpose of obtaining its crop of aloe. While we aren't shipping armies to go stock up on aloe, the plant remains a prized gift from the natural world. An ally for sunburn and skin irritation, aloe vera is highly regarded and used for its soothing, cooling, and healing qualities. Yet, this desert native isn't just soothing for the skin; it's also beneficial for the mouth and gastrointestinal tract tissues. Rinsing the mouth with aloe can ease canker sores, mouth ulcers and also reduce tooth decay. Growing in some of the driest of environments, this resilient plant offers us many wonderful gifts.

Monarda

This lovely native wildflower is known by several names: bee balm because it’s a favorite of bees; Oswego tea because it was used by the Iroquois; and bergamot because it smells faintly of bergamot orange, the famous scent in Earl Grey tea.

Monarda is named after Nicolas Monardes (1493-1588), the Spanish physician and botanist who, in 1577, wrote one of the very first books on North American plants. Bee balm was one of the hundreds of species shipped back to Spain and planted in Monardes’s gardens. Though Dr. Monardes never visited the Americas, he had a keen interest in the plants of the New World and was especially fond of his namesake, Monardes fistulosa.

Long before Dr. Monardes studies its uses in his gardens, native people had been using this healing herb for a variety of purposes. Because of the high content of the antiseptic thymol and its astringent healing properties, Monarda was commonly used for cleaning and healing wounds.

Bee Balm Oxymel 💚

An oxymel is an old-fashioned concoction of herbs, honey, and vinegar made popular by Hippocrates, known as the “father of modern medicine.” These preparations are still popular and in use today.

🍃⅓ cup fresh bee balm, leaves and flowers, chopped coarsely
🍃⅓ cup honey (raw and unpasteurized preferred)
🍃⅓ cup apple cider vinegar (raw and unpasteurized preferred)

Place herbs in a wide-mouth pint jar.
In a heavy-bottom pan, warm honey. Remove from heat and stir in the vinegar, mixing well. Pour the mixture over the herbs. If herbs are not covered completely, add a little more honey and vinegar so that they are covered.
Place a lid on the jar. Set it in a sunny spot in the kitchen and let sit 3-4 weeks, shaking daily.
Strain, discard herbs, and rebottle. Stored in a cool pantry or refrigerator, your oxymel will last for several weeks or longer.

Enjoy!
In the green,
Rosemary 🌷

How did primitive potters harvest clay?  People have been making pottery for millennia, and convenient hobby shops have only been a thing for a few decades at best.  Before that, people harvested their own clay

Slippery Elm Balls

* Combine slippery elm powder and honey.

* Roll into balls about the size of a hazelnut.

* Roll balls in slippery elm powder to coat.

* Store in a metal tin.

* They stay good for a long, long time, maybe decades.

Slippery elm balls are great for digestion.
Slippery elm is so safe that you can dissolve a ball in your mouth as often as you want, any time you feel any distress.
If you’re working with an ongoing condition, at least two a day is good.
Slippery elm restores the lining of the intestines, prevents any agents within the body from disturbing the intestines, and neutralizes any poisons that are present in or around the intestines.

Very interesting.....who knew!!
"Bay leaves"
Many people add bay leaves to foods especially a bowl of rice (Nigerian), red meat and poultry but do you know why bay leaves are added to food?
When asked why, some reply: to add flavor to the food👐
Do you know that If you boil some bay leaves in a glass of water and taste it, it will have little to no flavor?
Now why do you put bay leaves in the meat?
The addition of bay leaves to meat converts triglycerides to monounsaturated fats, and for experimentation and confirmation:
Cut the chicken in half and cook each half in a pan and place on one bay leaf, and the other without bay leaf and observe the amount of fat in both pans.
If you have bay leaves, there is no need for a pharmacy. Recent scientific studies have shown that bay leaves have many benefits & helps to get rid of many serious health problems and illnesses.
The benefits of bay leaf are: -
*Bay leaf treats digestive disorders and helps eliminate lumps, Heartburn, Acidity & Constipation.
*It helps regulate bowel movement by drinking hot bay tea.
*It lowers blood sugar and bay leaf is also an antioxidant
*It allows the body to produce insulin by eating it or drinking bay tea for a month.
*IT eliminates bad cholesterol and relieves the body of triglycerides.
*It's very useful in treating colds, flu and severe cough as it is a rich source of vitamin "C", you can boil the leaves and inhale steam to get rid of phlegm and reduce the severity of cough.
*Bay leaf protects the heart from seizures and strokes as it contains cardiovascular protective compounds.
*It's rich in acids such as caffeic acid, quercetin, eigonol and bartolinide, substances that prevent the formation of cancer cells in the body.
*It eliminates insomnia and anxiety, if taken before bed, helps you relax and sleep peacefully.
Drinking a cup of boiled bay leaves twice a day breaks kidney stones and cures infections ...
Just like garlic and ginger are a must find amongst my collection of spices, Bay leaves are a must see in my collection of spices too(my little spice secrets to good aroma and flavor) 👌👍
