In a stressful situation, have you ever acted in a way that you felt didn’t align with who you are as a person? 🙋🏻 Events like these can cause a lot of shame, embarrassment and can continue to be bothersome for years.

Your reactions were not based solely on what was happening in front of you. To make a decision on whether a situation merits a stress response or not, your brain looks at both the incoming information and your stored memories. Because your brain is trying to protect you from past hurtful experiences, sometimes that protective response is louder than we might like it to be. Try looking at your reaction as a need that wasn’t being met. What was that reaction trying to tell you? Did that stress response protect you at some points in your life?

When we offer others compassion we recognize that they are suffering and that mistakes are a part of a shared human experience. What would happen if you offered yourself the same warm, loving compassion that you offer others?

It’s often thought that anxiety is another term for nervousness. If these are the messages you’ve received about anxiety, it can be really scary and shocking when it shows up in the ways listed below. When we live with these symptoms, our health anxiety can greatly increase. It can be difficult to distinguish between real physical threats and symptoms of anxiety. During a panic attack, you might literally feel like you are going to die. When experiencing symptoms of anxiety or panic remind yourself that you can do this, even though your head is telling you that you can’t. These symptoms are uncomfortable but can’t hurt you. It will pass. You can get through this.

Try bringing you’re awareness outside your body. Splash cold water on your face, stomp your feet on the ground, rub your hands together really fast creating a warm friction. If you’re in public and want to be discrete, try rubbing your fingers along the edge of your keys while concentrating on the feeling.

Occupy your mind. Name every movie within a movie genre that you can think of. Count backwards from 100 in intervals of 7.

Ground yourself with breathing excercises. Try some of these:

Even our most ‘maladaptive’ behaviours are in place to protect us. There are parts of us that are in so much pain, that other parts within us will stop at nothing to protect them. Healing begins to happen when we recognize what they are protecting us from.

Loving ‘s Instagram page. IFS (internal family systems) is a therapy that recognizes and honours that there are many different parts of us that make us whole. We should learn to understand them and treat them with compassion.
