My teaching and planning parts are so excited to tell you about the student intern joining me for the next 3 months! Gus is warm, chill and engaging, and super invested in contributing to the q***r community as a future service provider. We are planning to run a group, create a workshop and a few other community-minded endeavours. My big thinker parts are relieved, happy and excited to have the help to make community work in solo private practice possible. We will have more info to come in the next few weeks! image text: Student Intern Gus Richardson they/them Master of Social Work student at St. Thomas University. Gus Richardson (they/them) is a white, q***r, non-binary, neurodivergent, and chronically ill settler living and learning on the ancestral and unceded lands of the Wolastoqiyik, Mi’kmaq, and Peskotomuhkati Peoples. They are currently enrolled in the Master of Social Work program at St. Thomas University and hold a Bachelor of Social Work from Dalhousie University.

Gus values unconditional positive regard, authenticity, and gentle curiosity in their approach. They strive to support personal healing and growth while also acknowledging, honouring, and validating the impacts that systemic oppression and institutional discrimination have in the lives of individuals. Their approach is further informed by their work in housing and harm reduction, which has provided a wealth of insight into the value and necessity of a practice framework that is grounded in anti-oppressive, decolonized, trauma-informed perspectives and facilitates meeting people where they are at.

Book reviews are back! This is a book that I come to when I need to refresh my sense of magic about the human condition. Short letters that read like poetry – I am no connoisseur of poetry but I do like it for that sense of awe that it lends to ordinary stuff. And that’s kind of what Kai Cheng Thom is saying…that this extraordinary beauty in compassion and reverence actually IS an ordinary thing… people are out there every day feeling the lightness of their bodies in ways we kind of take for granted, or don’t recognize. Anyway, she really slows it down to show us the details of love and I really need that in my life.

You can’t read therapy and self-help books all the time. Sometimes to reconnect with connection you have to be open to other ways of connecting? That was a confusing statement, I know. I stand by it though

Externalizing – using objects, drawings, words or movements to express a part of you that you want to work with. If I’m lucky enough to have you in person at my office, I have this beautiful collection of miniatures that we can use to represent parts – we can have them talk to each other, change their spots, act out their feelings – and practice responding from a place of spaciousness and caring. These little animals are so cute, it’s hard not to love ‘em.

Fancy therapy interventions aside, we are two humans in relationship and sometimes to feel heard, seen, and validated is what’s needed. Period. Image text: Sometimes you just need someone to say “It makes so much sense for you to be feeling this way.”

“I’m so anxious rn!” Yes, and how do you know you’re feeling anxious? What does your body feel like when you get anxious? What kind of images come up, thoughts, urges? What does it want you to know? Who/what else is here?
The majority of my clients who come in for anxiety actually have a very complex system of feelings around the part that is holding anxiety about something. Our job is to parse out these different feelings and check how we are responding toward it. How easy/hard is to respond with curiosity and compassion? No wrong answer here – we’re really just getting a picture of how your internal world works.

The present is most definitely connected to the past – our patterns of behavior and beliefs came from somewhere. Changing something requires us to understand it first. Approaching yourself from a place of curiosity, warmth and a desire to get to know yourself goes a long way towards healing those old patterns that don’t work for us anymore. Image text: As a relational therapist, you can bet I'm going to ask questions about your childhood. What did you learn about the world and your place in it? What creative coping skills did your kid self come up with?

It can be kinda awkward asking your (potential) new therapist about their experience in the field, but it's a totally valid question! You want to know that your therapy will be done with a confident, knowledgeable, experienced professional, right? So to answer that question (in part), I have 7+ years experience in the social work field; 2 years as a full time therapist; 150+ hours of specialized training and practice in IFS; 4 years as a WPATH member; and 1000's of hours working directly with clients. I'm happy to answer awkward questions!
