Devanshi Parikh, RMT, MLD/CDT-Vodder therapist

Devanshi Parikh, RMT, MLD/CDT-Vodder therapist RMT with a clinical focus on lymphedema management. Hi there,

I was practicing a physical therapy in India for over 2 years before moving to Fredericton.

My passion for healthcare led me to pursuing an education as a massage therapist from the 2200 hour massage therapy program at the Atlantic College of Therapeutic Massage in 2021, graduating with honours. I also received certificate of achievement in all 3 levels of Dr. Vodder's manual lymph drainage with combined decongestive therapy (lymphedema management) as well as in hot stone massage and basic elements of cranio-sacral therapy. I am a member in good standing with the College of Massage Therapists as well as the Association of New Brunswick Massage Therapists. As an RMT and a Vodder certified therapist, I love helping people maintain and manage lymphatic tissue health through Manual Lymph Drainage and Combined Decongestive Therapy. I always work with three core values- Excellence, Compassion and Patient-centered care which make my each treatment effective for my patients depending on their concern and symptoms.

❓Why Exercise Matters for Lymphedema❓

🧬The lymphatic system relies on muscle movement and joint activity to transport lymph fluid through the body. Unlike the circulatory system, it has no central pump like the heart. Physical activity activates the "muscle pump" mechanism, encouraging lymph to flow out of affected areas and into the central circulation.

When done consistently and correctly, exercise can:
- Decrease swelling
- Reduce tissue fibrosis
- Improve strength and range of motion
- Enhance overall function and quality of life

🏊🏻‍♀️However, not all types of exercise are appropriate for individuals with lymphedema. For many individuals with lymphedema, aquatic therapy offers an ideal environment to exercise safely and effectively.

🌿 Massage Therapy for Headache Relief 🌿
Headaches can be caused by many factors—stress, poor posture, muscle tension, or even lack of proper rest. Tension in the neck, shoulders, and scalp often triggers or worsens headaches.
Massage therapy works by:
✨ Releasing tight muscles in the neck, shoulders, and head
✨ Improving circulation and oxygen flow to the brain
✨ Reducing stress and calming the nervous system
✨ Helping prevent future headaches when done regularly
Whether you deal with tension headaches, stress-related pain, or occasional migraines, massage therapy offers a natural way to find relief and restore balance. 💆‍♀️✨

The start of a new school year often brings excitement, structure, and the challenge of adjusting to new schedules. For children, teens, and adults living with lymphedema, the transition can also bring unique concerns—managing swelling, staying active, and keeping up with daily routines while balancing school, work, or family responsibilities.

Back-to-school season is an opportunity to refresh routines and establish healthy habits—not just for students but also for parents and adults. Families managing lymphedema can begin the year with confidence and resilience by planning, communicating with schools and workplaces, and maintaining consistent care.

Remember: Consistency is the cornerstone of long-term lymphedema management. Children and adults can thrive throughout the year when daily care routines are woven into school and family life.

🤔Most people understand the importance of compression, movement, and skincare when managing lymphedema. But one often-overlooked piece of the puzzle is hydration. There’s plenty of confusion around how much water people with lymphedema should drink and whether fluid intake might worsen swelling.

❓How Much Water Should You Drink?
👉🏻While needs vary by individual, a general guideline is half your body weight in ounces of water daily. For example, a person weighing 160 pounds would aim for 80 ounces of water daily. Those engaging in exercise, living in hot climates, or taking certain medications may need more.

Note: Always consult your physician if you have kidney, heart, or other medical conditions that affect fluid regulation.

🥛Proper hydration is a foundational part of lymphedema management. It keeps lymph fluid flowing, reduces the risk of flare-ups, and supports every system in the body. Don’t fear the water—embrace it as a key ally in your journey to better lymphatic health.

By the time you feel thirsty, you may already be mildly dehydrated. This is especially important for older adults and those with chronic conditions like lymphedema, where optimal hydration supports cellular function and tissue repair.

Helpful tip: Keep a water bottle nearby and sip throughout the day—even if you’re not thirsty.

While tea, coffee, and sports drinks can contribute to hydration, many also contain caffeine, sugar, or additives that may contribute to inflammation or have diuretic effects in excess. Sugary or salty drinks can also disrupt fluid balance.

Best choices: Water, herbal teas, and diluted fruit-infused water greatly support lymphatic and overall health.

The lymphatic system relies on a well-hydrated environment to function. Without adequate fluid intake, lymph becomes more viscous and difficult to move through the vessels. This can lead to stagnation, inflammation, and increased swelling.

Healthy practice: Aim for consistent daily fluid intake instead of avoiding fluids altogether.

This is one of the most common misconceptions. Some believe drinking water will add to fluid buildup in already-swollen limbs. In reality, dehydration can cause the body to retain more fluid as a protective mechanism, potentially worsening lymphedema symptoms.

Bottom line: Drinking enough water helps flush waste products and keeps lymph fluid moving properly.
