Today we celebrate the strength, resilience, and leadership of women in agriculture.

On International Women’s Day, and in this International Year of the Woman Farmer, the National Farmer Mental Health Alliance honours the women who plant, lead, nurture, advocate, and carry so much — often quietly, often courageously.

To the women farmers, ranchers, agronomists, veterinarians, entrepreneurs, and caregivers:
Your work feeds families.
Your leadership strengthens communities.
Your well-being matters.

This year, let’s grow more than crops. Let’s grow support. Let’s grow connection. Let’s grow space for women in agriculture to thrive.

The United Nations has declared 2026 the International Year of the Woman Farmer — a global recognition of the essential leadership, skill, and care women bring to agriculture every day.

Across Canada and around the world, women are shaping the future of farming — driving innovation, stewarding land, strengthening food systems, and sustaining their communities through both visible and behind-the-scenes work.

At the same time, many women in agriculture navigate unique pressures: balancing farm operations with caregiving, accessing land and capital, and carrying added responsibility during times of uncertainty. Recognizing these realities is part of building stronger, more inclusive agricultural systems.

When farmers thrive, agriculture thrives. Strengthening access, opportunity, and wellbeing supports the resilience of entire communities.

To the women in farming: your leadership matters. Your contributions matter. And your wellbeing matters.

What does meaningful support look like to you? We’re listening. ⬇️

Workshop coming up this Thursday!

🌾In the Know - Farm Talk Care
Take a meaningful step toward strengthening mental health in agriculture — join us for In The Know, a supportive workshop for the agricultural community facilitated by the Canadian Centre for Agricultural Wellbeing (CCAW).

📅 February 26, 2026
🕥 10:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. AST
💻 Virtual | Free
> Register here: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/in-the-know-en-toute-connaissance-tickets-1981937866511?aff=oddtdtcreator

This four-hour mental health literacy workshop is designed specifically for farmers, farm families, and members of the agricultural community. In The Know is tailored to agriculture and uses real-life farm examples to make mental health practical, relevant, and easy to understand.

This is one of the foundational mental health literacy courses we would like Peer Support network members to have completed. If you have not yet taken Mental Health First Aid or In the Know, this is a great opportunity to get that training piece completed and add to your toolkit!

Honorariums are available for your time ($50/half day). Hope you can join us!

What you’ll learn:

✅ How stress, anxiety, depression, acute trauma, su***de, and substance use can affect you, your family, and your farm.
✅ How to recognize signs of mental distress in yourself and others — and how it may show up in day-to-day farm operations.
✅ Practical, safe ways to start conversations about mental well-being with someone who may be struggling.

Facilitated by mental health professionals from the Canadian Centre for Agricultural Wellbeing, this award-winning program is based on Mental Health First Aid but adapted specifically for agriculture. It has been tested and proven to increase awareness and confidence in seeking and offering support

Family Day is on Monday February 16th, 2026

Family on the farm can be a source of connection, joy, fun, support and wisdom. At times, family can also be a source of stress, challenging dynamics, boundary pushing and grief. Family relationships are nuanced. No matter which situation you find yourself in, Farm Talk Care is here to connect you to resources to gain support and skills. 🌐 https://farmtalkcare.ca/

Incorporating time for fun and connection is a protective factor for mental health and overall health. While statutory holidays seldom mean that a farmer can take a day off, try to plan on taking at least a small break as a family next Monday. Some options include: taking a walk, building a snowman or visiting someone you care about.

If you don’t have family close by, take the opportunity to reach out to friends, colleagues or neighbors for at least a small fun break. Often, farming teams are small and know each other well enough that the whole work team can feel like family.
