How is River Stone Recovery Centre Harm-Reductionist?

πŸ‘‰ River Stone Recovery Centre meets participants where they are to create individualized plans to help them achieve their goals, whatever they may be. We do not insist on abstinence or even reduced use of opioids and stimulants, though many of our participants have set such goals. River Stone offers medical support to help participants safely avoid withdrawal sickness and psychosocial support to address the conditions that led to and feed their substance use disorder and to help them make desired changes in their lives.

River Stone offers Stimulant Replacement Therapy to treat patients who are addicted to stimulants such as co***ne, amphetamines ("speed"), and crystal m**hamphetamine. Several medications can help reduce cravings for illicit stimulants.

πŸ‘‰ Problematic stimulant use is not always a sign of a stimulant use disorder that needs to be treated with SRT. People living with opioid use disorder and without housing often turn to stimulants, particularly crystal m**hamphetamine, to cope with opioid withdrawal and the stresses of living outside.

πŸ‘‰ Many of our OAT and iOAT patients who have used crystal m**h heavily tell us that being treated for their opioid use disorder eliminates or greatly reduces their use of crystal m**h. When they feel more stable and aren't grappling with opioid withdrawal symptoms, they have little desire for the drug.

Such a devastating loss for our community. Julia was a force of compassion and love, creating space for everyone to feel welcomed. Condolences to her family and loved ones, and all the rest of us as we grieve.

πŸ‘‰ For the 15% of people with severe opioid use disorder who have not found oral OAT medications effective and who inject unregulated, illicit, and increasingly toxic drugs, we provide injectable opioid agonist therapy (iOAT). People take their medication by injection 3 times a day and then take a long-acting oral medication overnight to help stay out of withdrawal sickness.

πŸ‘‰ This helps people avoid death from toxic drugs and become medically stable enough to have space to see what other things they want to recover, their physical and mental health, their loved ones, and their sense of self.

πŸ‘‰ iOAT medication is prescribed and only taken in the clinic, which helps people stop from having to engage in illegal activity to access dangerous, unregulated street drugs. No illegally accessed drugs are taken in our medical clinic, differing us from a safe injection site - however, these are still needed as a gateway into support and care.
