As staff at CRMHAA observe the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation, our office will be CLOSED today.

The day of Truth and Reconciliation is meant to remember and honour any persons effected by the Residential Schools. Those who are effected by the subsequent generational trauma, survivors themselves, family and friends of the survivors, and those who unfortunately never made it home. It also serves as an opportunity for non-Indigenous Canadians to reflect on their role in helping Indigenous communities heal but never forget, and in creating and strengthening equitable relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples.

09/29/2025

Our offices and services will be closed tomorrow, September 30th, for the National Day of Truth & Reconciliation.

As a community mental health service, we acknowledge the harmful, racist and colonial practices that have been used in Canada’s mental health systems in the past, and present.
We call upon all levels of government to heed the recommendations of The Truth and Reconciliation Committee’s call to action, particularly around mental health and healing.

Today marks World Su***de Prevention Day, a time dedicated to raising awareness, fostering change and providing support to all those with lived or living experience of su***de.

This year’s theme, Changing the Narrative of Su***de, is a reminder of how important it is to engage in open and honest discussions about su***de. Initiating these conversations can help break down stigma, raise awareness and create a culture of better understanding and support within communities.

Literacy and mental health are interconnected, with low literacy linked to poor mental health outcomes and higher literacy associated with better mental well-being and increased resilience. Reading can foster critical thinking and empathy, while Mental health literacy—the knowledge to recognize, manage, and seek help for mental health issues—is a crucial determinant of mental health.

Reading strengthens a child's capacity for critical thinking, empathy, and resilience, which are protective factors against mental health conditions like depression and anxiety.

Advocating for communities to prioritize reading programs can provide critical long-term benefits for mental health across generations.

Friend, coworker, sister, uncle, daughter, or son: 800,000 individuals die from su***de every year, and they each have a name, face, hobbies, and people who love them.

September is Su***de Prevention Awareness Month, a time we look at this relatively taboo topic. Talking about su***de reduces the stigma surrounding su***de and su***de attempts, which can help those experiencing these feelings realize that they are not alone, and that other people care.

Together, we can shine a light on su***de and give our loved ones, family, and coworkers hope that life is worth living.

If you or a loved one are struggling with thoughts of su***de, don’t hesitate to call or text 988 to access a team of mental health professionals 24 hours a day.
