To all clients and anyone who currently wears hearing aids:

Be very careful when putting on and taking off any type of protective mask. Make sure to be mindful of your hearing aids when wearing masks and make sure they do not fall out when putting a mask on or off.

We've noticed an increase in lost aids due to wearing a mask and although wearing a mask is a good idea right now, you'll need to be extra careful you don't knock out a hearing aid(s) when wearing masks.

Around the World, May has been deemed "Better Hearing & Speech" Month.

The month is dedicated to raising awareness about communication health and how we can actively engage ourselves for better hearing, better brain health and better relationships.

Many of us take the ability to communicate for granted, but the ability to speak, understand, hear and be heard, is a vital part of our existence as humans. Whether you've experienced it or not, those who have issues hearing & communicating deal with REAL challenges every day. For them, something as simple as talking on the phone can be difficult & exhausting.

If you're interacting with someone you suspect or know has a communication challenge, remember to:

Speak at a moderate rate and repeat if asked. Exercise patience during communication

Use text interpretation of speech through cellphone apps and pen and paper

Utilize text messaging or video apps with the captioning feature enabled

Use assistive listening devices for communication where possible.

Communication during these times is more important than ever for everyone and their cognitive health and we must do everything we can to engage and promote active, engaging communication with people who may or may not have a hearing difficulty.

Hearing loss is difficult to understand if you have never experienced it. Part of it is obvious — we don’t hear things well — but other parts are confusing. Why do we hear well in one situation but not in another? Why are we sensitive to loud sounds? Why can we hear some people easily, but not others? Why must communication partners face us when speaking? Do we all know sign language? The questions are endless, as are the ways we try to explain our experience to the uninitiated.

Hearing Loss Is Like Playing Wheel of Fortune
Imagine a game board from the Wheel of Fortune. Some of the letters are filled in; others are blank. This is what a person with hearing loss hears. Then they must combine these assorted and incomplete sounds with lipreading cues and what they know about the topic being discussed to create words and phrases that make sense in the context of the conversation. It takes a lot of brainpower and can be exhausting.

I Don’t Have Peripheral Hearing
A big thank you to Jon Taylor, HLAA’s NYC Chapter Vice President for this one. When I first heard him say it, a lightbulb went off. It perfectly describes that for people with hearing loss, hearing is not passive; it is an active process that takes concentration and effort. Hearing is not something we do in the background while performing another activity. It is the activity. This explanation also demonstrates why it is important to get the attention of the person with hearing loss before you speak. Unless they are alertly listening, they are not going to hear you.

Hearing Aids Don’t Work Like Glasses
People often wonder why we don’t hear “normally” with our hearing aids. It is because hearing aids do not work like glasses. Glasses take an image that is blurry and distorted and for most people, turn it into something that is sharp and clear. Unfortunately, hearing aids do not work the same way. Hearing aids make things louder, but not crisper. The sound pattern often remains muffled or unclear.

Hearing aids are also not good at differentiating among sounds, so they augment the unwanted background noise in addition to the important speech sounds. This can often make it harder to hear in a noisy environment.

I’m A Little Bit Deaf
While I do not consider myself to be culturally Deaf and do not use sign language to communicate, explaining my hearing issues as being a little bit deaf can work wonders. Automatically, my requests for accommodations or the use of communication best practices are taken more seriously. Perhaps “deaf” sounds more serious than hearing loss. Be sure to clarify that you do not use sign language, unless, of course, you do. Many people incorrectly assume that the vast majority of people with hearing problems know how to sign. The opposite is actually true.

If I Can’t See You, I Can’t Hear You
For people with hearing loss, hearing is both auditory and visual. Body language, lipreading clues and facial expression are all important components we use to make sense of the sounds we hear. A fellow HLAA NYC Chapter member Ruth Bernstein recommends saying, “Don’t speak until you see the whites of my eyes,” stating that it is much clearer than simply asking someone to face them. It is also more memorable, which might make compliance with the request more likely.

Pictures Speak Louder Than Words
Some people are visual learners so verbal explanations are not helpful. The following pictures accurately demonstrate the experience of hearing loss and have tutorial benefits as well. The image of the hand covering the words in the first image makes it crystal clear why speakers must keep their mouths uncovered for you to “read their lips.” The last speaks volumes about why multiple speakers are difficult to follow.

Tip # 5: Get Your Sleep.

Everyone knows how important sleep is you your overall health. It's essential to body and brain health and helps repair, heal & reset.

Wind down at night by turning the lights down or off an hour or so before bed. If your watching tv or looking at a phone or tablet, set the brightness to a red or blue hue or the "night shift" setting. Also, try not to sleep with electronics in your bedroom.

Some activities to try before bed instead of TV or scrolling your phone to promote better sleep:

Read
Puzzle or game
Meditate
Have a bath or shower
Exercise ( at least 1 hour before bedtime)

Do you have any night time rituals to help you sleep?

Tip # 4: Take Vitamins

Your body gets a lot of the necessary vitamins from your food and a healthy diet increases your intake of essential vitamins. But, it's not always possible to get enough vitamins from your food so I take vitamin C and D daily to boost my immune system.

Here is a list of some essentail vitamins:

Vitamin D

Decrease likelihood of getting sick
Decrease chances of bone and back pain
Decrease bone and hair loss

Magnesium

Help calm our nervous system and reduce stress after 90 days
Help ease sleep problems
Help regulate muscle and nerve function
Help balance blood sugar levels
Help make protein, bone, and even DNA

Calcium

Foods rich in calcium:

Fortified cereals
Milk, cheese, and yogurt
Salty fish
Broccoli and kale
Nuts and nut butters
Beans and lentils

If your diet is rich in these foods, you’re likely getting enough calcium already.

Zinc

Most diets aren't rich in foods that offer zinc, and the body can’t store zinc, which is why your daily supplements should include this vitamin.

Iron

Increased energy
Better brain function
Healthy red blood cells

Folate

Folate (or folic acid) is best known for aiding in fetus development and preventing birth defects. But if you’re growing out your nails, fighting depression, or looking to combat inflammation, this ingredient is important, too.

Vitamin B-12

The B-vitamin complex is like a factory made up of eight diligent workers who band together to create and sustain our body’s energy supply by breaking down the micronutrients we consume (fats, proteins, carbs).

Each worker has a specialized role, too. Vitamin B-12 works to keep the body’s nerve and blood cells healthy and helps make DNA, the genetic material in all cells. Vegan or vegetarians are prone to vitamin B-12 deficiency because most food sources are animal-based like meat, poultry, fish, and eggs.

By now, most or all of you are experiencing the negative impact of being isolated from family and friends. Communicating and our relationships with others are often taken for granted until we're no longer able to socialize like we're accustomed to.

Many of us are lucky that this isolation will eventually end and life will continue as it did before.

Unfortunately, for people with hearing loss, isolation is an everyday situation and can cause their relationships to suffer.

If social distancing and self-isolation haven't impacted your life much, you may be suffering (in silence) from hearing loss.

Don't miss out on the music of life.

Tip # 3: Eat Clean.

Have you found it hard not to snack more when spending a lot more time at home? I know I've been feeling guilty about this lately.

It's very important to introduce more fruits and vegetables to into your diet to stay healthy and boost your immune system. Also, try and limit or eliminate sugar whenever possible.

There may be a shortage of toilet paper but there are still lots of fruits & veggies at the grocery store!

Tip #2: Hydrate. Hydrate. Hydrate.

With the majority of our bodies being made up of water ( 45-60% for women & 50-65% for men), it is extremely important to drink plenty of water. If you were to catch any type of virus, drinking lots of water will help flush it from your system, faster.

Most of us as dehydrated and are not aware. Try to drink filtered water & not tap water. Limit bottled water to reduce plastic consumption and help save our planet.

Recommended water consumption:

About 15.5 cups (3.7 litres) of fluids for men
About 11.5 cups (2.7 litres) of fluids a day for women

- Factors that may cause water needs to increase -

Exercise. If you do any activity that makes you sweat, you need to drink extra water to cover the fluid loss.

Environment. Hot or humid weather can make you sweat and requires additional fluid intake.

Overall health. Your body loses fluids when you have a fever, vomiting or diarrhea.

Pregnancy or breast-feeding. Women who are pregnant or breast-feeding need additional fluids to stay hydrated.

Do you use any type of water machine or a filtered water system?

We'd like to offer everyone some helpful tips and ideas to keep busy, happy & healthy.

We will be posting a few new tips each week.

Tip #1: Improve Your Mental Health

Keeping your mental health strong (especially during isolation) will help you reduce stress, improve your immune system & leave you feeling happier and healthier.

- Great Mental Health Activities -

✔️ Watch a movie (documentaries are best)
✔️ Listen to music or a podcast
✔️ Take an online course

The most important thing is that you stimulate your body and mind. Binge-watching Netflix shouldn't be all you're doing during your time at home.
