What is the CBIT Program at Full Circle OT?

In addition to the programs that we have become known for at Full Circle, we have recently become aware of a need for additional management skills and strategies for clients with Tourette’s syndrome, focusing on the non-medicated treatment options that can reduce tic severity.

Rebecca Wurm, our lead OT and the heart behind all of our services has been working hard to put together a Comprehensive Behavioural Intervention for Tics (CBIT) program with the support of the Tourette Syndrome Behavior Therapy Institute.

This program consists of three components:

1) supporting the child to be more aware of their tics and the urge to tic,

2) teaching the child to do competing behavior when they feel the urge to tic and

3) making changes to day-to-day activities in ways that can help reduce tics.

The Full Circle OT CBIT program is a highly structured therapy administered once a week, over 8-10 weeks, but can be adjusted to meet the needs of children and their families. Through this program, children will learn a set of management skills and strategies that can be applied as needed.

And great news for families outside of Fredericton…virtual CBIT therapy has been proven to be just as effective as in-person treatment!

Please fill in this form if you are interested in connecting with our team about the CBIT Program or reach out to Jessica at info@otfullcircle.com

With coronavirus being a concern for grown ups, kids might also be worrying. Here's how to talk about COVID-19 with your young children, plus ways to practice healthy habits all year round.

A great reminder of age appropriate expectations!

A great reminder of age appropriate expectations!

This is my most widely shared post. And rightly so, it’s an important one. These are “prewriting patterns”, with the average (not prescribed) age at which children are developmentally ready to achieve these patterns listed below them in years and months. Being able to process visual information and produce a movement in response (e.g. copying these prewriting patterns or letter formations), is known as “visual motor integration”. ⠀

Note that an X is not typically achieved until 4 years 11 months, and a triangle at 5 years 3 months. If a child can’t form these basic shapes...then they probably won’t be able to form letters. ⠀

It is quite concerning then that there are 3 year 7 month olds starting formal schooling, where they’re expected to write. Not only are their visual motor integration skills not developed enough, their hands are also physically under-developed. In addition, recognising letters, understanding phonics and beginning to read are all needed in order for a child to write meaningfully, skills which children starting kindy typically don’t have. We also know that when a child learns something that doesn’t hold meaning, it‘s unlikely to stick. ⠀

So if you have a 3-4 year old who spontaneously asks or attempts to write letters, that’s great; otherwise, there is no need to initiate or worry about this. Unfortunately there is a misconception, particularly with the way that the current curriculum stands, that earlier is better. Earlier is not always better.⠀
