Reduce risks to your dental health while eating 🦷

Acidic foods and drinks can temporarily soften tooth enamel—but a few smart habits can help protect your smile. Wait about 30 minutes before brushing after eating or drinking acidic foods

• Drink acidic beverages in one sitting instead of sipping throughout the day
• Have acidic drinks with meals when possible
• If brushing isn’t an option, rinse with water or drink water to reduce acidity
• Stimulate saliva flow to help neutralize acids—try sugar-free gum
• A crisp apple can help stimulate saliva and clean teeth in the moment (but it’s not a substitute for brushing or flossing)

Small changes = big protection for your enamel ✨

Week 3 of Oral Health Month 🦷

Did you know your snacking habits affect your dental health? Bacteria in dental plaque use sugars from our diet to produce acids that can weaken and damage tooth enamel.

Snacks to limit:
• Sticky snacks (dried fruit, crackers, cereal bars) that cling to teeth
• Caramel, toffee, and chocolate
Better alternatives:
• Cheese, yogurt, milk • Smoothies
• Nuts and seeds
• Vegetables and fruit

Tip: Foods listed under “snacks to limit” can still be enjoyed occasionally as a treat. It’s best to have them with a meal rather than as a standalone snack, and to brush afterward when possible. ✨🦷

Tips to help kids prevent tooth decay 🦷✨

● Skip toddlers bedtime bottles with milk—choose water instead
● Use toothpaste wisely (rice-grain size for kids under 3 and a pea-sized amount for kids over 3)
● Book a dental visit by age one or within 6 months of the first tooth

Even if X-rays or cleanings aren’t needed, early visits help parents learn about brushing and eating habits to prevent cavities down the road.

Let’s learn about dry mouth!

Dry mouth happens when your body doesn’t produce enough saliva. Since saliva helps keep your mouth moist and protects against tooth decay, having less of it can increase your risk of cavities. Common causes include certain medications, inhaler (puffer) use, and cannabis use. 💧🦷

Healthy teeth start with healthy habits.

Brush twice a day thoroughly, and remember, floss is your friend! Floss daily (and as needed). Brush and floss with your kids; the earlier they build these habits, the more benefits they’ll enjoy for a lifetime. 🦷✨

Fluoride & Your Water 💧🦷

As of 2023, there are no communities in New Brunswick adding fluoride to their drinking water. Some areas may still have small amounts of naturally occurring fluoride in their drinking water, depending on local groundwater (aquifer) conditions.

Because fluoride exposure can vary, using fluoride toothpaste and rinses play an important role in protecting your teeth.

04/08/2026

What are the Benefits of using Fluoride for Dental Health?

Benefits:
• strengthens tooth enamel
• reduces growth of bacteria and their acid activity
• repairs early damage

Using a fluoride rinse once daily (such as a 0.05% fluoride rinse), often recommended at bedtime, can support enamel repair and help reduce the risk of tooth decay caused by sugary and acidic foods throughout the day.

More oral health tips coming soon—stay tuned!

Happy Oral Health Month! 🦷

In celebration, we’ll be posting all month long with oral health facts, tips, and helpful information to keep your smile healthy.

This week, we are talking about fluoride, which is a naturally occurring mineral. In Canada, fluoride is found naturally in our water, air, food and soil. Fluoride helps prevent tooth decay, one of the most common yet serious oral health conditions in Canada. It’s been used safely and effectively to protect teeth since the 1940s.

We’ll continue our fluoride discussion on Wednesday, so stay tuned!

Dental Assistant Recognition Week is an annual opportunity to celebrate dental assistants and the essential work they do in every dental practice. It takes a team to successfully run a practice.

03/01/2026

Did you know that the first week of March is National Dental Assistants Recognition Week? (We did not know this either.)

However, we do know that in late May 2026, the NB Dental Society will hold their Conference and Annual General Meeting here at the FCC!

So if you see a Dental Assistant this week – let them know you appreciate them!
