It has information on our past activities and a call out to speak with operators of Early Learning and Childcare Centres in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Prince Edward Island with recruitment and retention experience of Early Childhood Educators (ECEs).

The Atlantic Canada Early Childhood Education Lab is where we are hoping to reimagine what it means for educators in licensed early learning and childcare centers to thrive in their careers. Since July 2020, we have convened 4 teams representing 3 Atlantic Canadian provinces.

Early Childhood Educator Study Leave Substitute

Would you like to work one day per week at an Early Learning and Childcare Centre for 12 wks?

Would you like to help an existing Early Childhood Educator obtain their professional qualification by covering their study leave in an exciting new program being tested by The Early Childhood Education Lab offered by NouLAB: New Brunswick's Social and Public Policy Innovation Lab?

The Early Childhood Educator (ECE) Study Leave Substitute will work one shift per week at the Moncton Sportsdome and Margies Early Learning Centre for 12 weeks, to provide an existing team member with the opportunity to take paid leave while studying for their credentials. During each shift, the ECE Substitute will deliver a quality caring and supportive early childhood education program while meeting all regulatory standards. This position reports to the Centre director.

Qualifications:

A minimum of 6 months experience working with children, in the Early Childhood Education, or Education sector preferred

To join the supply list, you would have to complete:

Criminal Record or Vulnerable Sector Check;
Check with Department of Social Development; and,
First Aid/CPR training.

You would also have to take the province's free Introduction to Early Childhood Education Course (90 hours) if you don't already have your Early Childhood Education Credential. If you haven't already completed the course, showing proof of registration is acceptable.

Duties / Responsibilities

Take two-day orientation provided by the Centre
Carry out indoor and outdoor activities that have been planned for the children that day
Willing and able to get down on floor and play
Change diapers Feed children Be outside, take children for walks
Read to children
Be actively engaged with children 5-12 (Sportsdome) and 0-15months (YW Margie's Early Learning Centre)
Supervise and engage with children
Be aware of and adhere to licensing requirements
Be part of a team but work independently
Take part in interview at beginning and end of contract to reflect on the role

Working Conditions

The childcare facility is located in New Maryland and licensed for 60 children
Indoor and outdoor activities
Standing, bending, crouching, some lifting

Wages

$14.90 per hour (without ECE Credential) or $19 per hour (with ECE Credential - one year certificate or more)
You will be paid for time at orientation course and each shift worked
Costs incurred obtaining required checks and First Aid/CPR training will be reimbursed

Hours of Work

One day per week for 12 weeks, starting October 4th - December 17th
Sportsdome (Monday or Wednesday 8:30 am - 5:00 pm)
Margie's Early Learning Centre (Mondays 8am-5pm with 1 hour lunch break)

Working Early Childhood Educators have a wealth of experience and knowledge, and are often the cornerstone of Early Learning and Childcare Centres. There are many barriers that deter these Seasoned Practitioners from pursuing training for credentials. Our Early Childhood Education Lab is hoping to find ways to reduce some of these barriers; we are currently looking for people to test one idea - a Study Leave Substitute Program Concept.
We are looking for people with experience working with young children who are willing to work one day per week for twelve weeks in one of our three test sites (one in New Maryland, two in Moncton). This is a unique opportunity for someone who loves working with children to help an Early Childhood Educator obtain their professional qualification by covering their study leave. NouLAB is a New Brunswick's Social Innovation Lab. The Early Childhood Education Lab is exploring ways to help support working Early Childhood Educators in Atlantic Canada obtain their professional credentials (see the ECE Lab website for more information).

Team NB wanted to focus on reducing one stressor for ECEs pursuing training for credentials while working. One of the challenges that came up repeatedly throughout the lab was time: a lack of time to study, a lack of time to rest, and a lack of time to spend with family.

One of the barriers to ELCCs providing study leave is a lack of reliable substitutes. As such, the idea that Team NB are exploring is a Study Leave Support Program for Working ECEs.

We are hoping to: find up to three ELCCs who have a seasoned practitioner currently enrolled in an upcoming NBCC ECE course;
- recruit and onboard three super substitutes to work with a single ELCC, to
- cover one shift per week to provide study leave for each seasoned practitioner.

Our hearts are heavy and we are feeling this loss deeply. Every NouLAB project crossed Heather's desk at one point or another and she was the wiz behind the scenes that made it all happen. She loved working creatively with the team and brought with her a sense of purpose and possibility for what could be achieved. Our thoughts are with her family and friends
