Common misconceptions that deter people from getting therapy for their physical injuries.

1. Therapy always hurts: This is not true and often therapy does the opposite. The aim of therapy is to help reduce pain and discomfort. Having some discomfort is not uncommon while getting treatment but high levels of pain are uncommon with therapy treatment.

2. Therapists "fix" you: The most common misconception about therapists is that they are healers and made your pain or injury go away. Therapists work to educate, provide tools, knowledge and confidence to push YOU in the right direction to heal your injury. The body is a magical thing and when put in the optimal environment, it heals its own tissues more rapidly. This onus is also on the patient to do their exercises and follow the guidance of their therapist.

3. You need a doctor referral for therapy: This is FALSE and you can call us right now at 613-382-4200 to book your initial assessment. A note from your doctor is not required to get physical therapy. At any time your therapist can refer you back to your doctor if needed for further assessment or imaging.

If you are dealing with any injuries, pain, are post surgery, or are just looking to maintain your good health call us at 613-382-4200 or book online.

We currently offer:
Physiotherapy
Athletic Therapy
Massage Therapy
Personal Training

Now that the colder weather is starting to settle in many people will stop going outside as much which often means less activity during the day. Workouts at home may seem complicated but they are not always as complicated as they appear.

You do not need a full at home gym to be able to have effective workouts at home. The purchase of a resistance exercise band or set of bands may be all you need to have an effective workout.

Today we will talk about upper body workouts using just a resistance band.

The main movements of the upper body are push, pull, press, rotation and anti-rotation. This targets all our larger muscles of the upper body including our chest, back, shoulders, and core. These areas can all be targeted effectively using an exercise band especially if you are newer to exercise or are focused on maintenance.

By changing the orientation of your band and your direction of pull you can target different muscles more effectively. Performing a row with the band in front of you and finishing with your elbows at your side will target your mid back whereas doing a high row with your hands finishing at your forehead will target your upper back. A pull down will target your lats more effectively and your lower back.

These are just some examples of how you can target your upper body in different ways. If you are looking to increase your activity level as the snow starts coming down outside reach out to us to set up a fitness assessment to get your started on your home or in gym exercise program.

Tyler is our personal trainer and athletic therapist that will help aid you through your fitness journey. Everyone has a different journey, and Tyler can assist you whether that is looking to maintain movement/strength, improve balance, speed, strength, power, etc.

If you are interested in starting your fitness journey and achieving your goals call us at 613-382-4200 to book your fitness assessment and let us guide you through YOUR fitness journey.

Cheryl Colford is now offering reflexology at our clinic on Monday evenings starting in December!

WHAT IS REFLEXOLOGY AND HOW CAN IT HELP ME ?
Reflexology is a holistic healing practice that involves applying pressure to specific points on the feet to stimulate the body's natural healing abilities. This ancient therapeutic technique is based on the belief that these areas, known as reflex points, correspond to different organs, glands, and systems throughout the body.
By applying targeted pressure to these points, Reflexologists aim to restore balance and harmony within the body, promoting overall well-being.

Reflexology is deeply rooted in traditional Chinese medicine and has also been influenced by various other ancient healing practices from different cultures around the world.
The benefits of reflexology are numerous and can positively impact both physical and mental health. One of the primary advantages is stress reduction. By targeting and releasing tension in the reflex points, reflexology helps to relax the body and mind, reducing stress and promoting a sense of calm and relaxation. This, in turn,
can lead to improved sleep patterns, increased energy levels, and enhanced mood.

Reflexology is also known to improve circulation, which can aid in the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to cells, promoting better overall health and supporting the body's natural healing processes. Additionally, the stimulation of reflex points may help to alleviate pain and discomfort, making it beneficial for individuals with
chronic pain conditions, injuries, or specific ailments.
Moreover, reflexology can boost the immune system and improve the body's ability to detoxify. By promoting the efficient function of organs and systems, it helps to enhance the body's natural defense mechanisms. Reflexology sessions also offer an opportunity for relaxation and self-care, which can have a positive
impact on mental health and emotional well-being. Clients often report feelings of rejuvenation and a sense of balance after a reflexology session.

Give Reflexology a try and see how it can benefit you.

Call 613-382-4200 or book online at movewell.ca for an appointment.

What does it do Wednesday?

Today we are going to talk about the rotator cuff. This is a group of muscles that you often hear people talk about when dealing with a shoulder injury.

The rotator cuff consists of 4 muscles: the supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor, and subscapularis.

Although the rotator cuff is often a group of muscles that you will strengthen, they are small muscles that do not act as a prime mover even though they help with arm movement.

You may be thinking “Well what does the rotator cuff do then?”
The rotator cuff’s main job is to stabilize the head of the humerus (upper arm bone) into the glenoid fossa (the socket on your shoulder blade). The rotator cuff holds the joint together as it is not a structurally strong joint. The head of the humerus is much larger than the socket which can resemble a golf ball sitting on a tee. The muscles of the rotator cuff attach around the head of the humerus to keep it in the socket, so we do not deal with increased shoulder instability or dislocations.

The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the human body which is where the rotator cuff comes in to stabilize movements and keep the joint in the correct position based on movement to achieve our full range of motion.

If a muscle in the rotator cuff becomes injured our biomechanics change in the shoulder and range of motion is often lost. Injury comes in many forms from tendonitis, tears, impingement, calcification, etc.

These conditions can lead to pain, decreased movement, and altered biomechanics when raising the arm up for to the side. These injuries often need intervention to heal fully and to correct the changes in your movement.

If you are dealing with a slow onset of shoulder pain or have and your shoulder still hurts, then it may be your rotator cuff that is damaged.

If you are dealing with shoulder pain reach out to us and see how we can help you. We offer both physiotherapy and athletic therapy services to help reach your goals. Call us at 613-382-4200 to book your assessment and help us help you get back to your normal activities.

Athletic Therapy Tip of the Week!

Or maybe question with answer for the week.

How much exercise should you be getting per week?

Take a second to guess if you are not sure before reading further.

Okay now I am going to make sure you have another second to guess before reading the answer.

It is recommended that adults exercise for 150 minutes a week which consists of moderate intensity activity.

This can be accomplished by going for a brisk walk and can be broken up into chunks of 30 minutes a day for 5 days a week.

You could also substitute a more vigorous activity like jogging or running for 75 minutes a week instead.

It is also recommended that you include muscle strengthening activity 2 days/week that works all of your major muscle groups.
This includes your legs, hips, back, chest, shoulders, arms, and core.

If you are looking to get more active or stay active as the winter months and are unsure where to start give us a call.

We now offer personal training sessions under the name of functional training. Tyler is a certified personal trainer and athletic therapist.

Whether your goal is to improve general strength, balance, or improve athletic ability Tyler is here to help you.

Athletic Therapy Tip of the Week!

Let's talk about stretching.

A common theme with people we see in the clinic is a lack of flexibility in muscles. This can be improved with stretching which has many benefits.

Stretching has many benefits which include:

- Increase flexibility
- Decrease risk of strain injuries
- Relaxation of muscles
- Move joints through full range of motion
- Increased blood flow to muscles

If you are not dealing with an injury holding static stretches for 30 seconds a day is beneficial to continue normal movement as you play sports and age. You will not see flexibility changes in a day but if you can build a habit of stretching daily you will see an increase in the flexibility of your muscles.

If you are dealing with an injury stretching is beneficial when prescribed properly depending on the condition.

If you are not sure where to start, book in with us at Movewell Rehabilitation Centre and see how we can help!
You can book online or call 613-382-4200.
