The role of a dental hygienist extends beyond “cleaning teeth”.

We are oral health care professionals who promote, educate and serve in our communities. An independent dental hygienist is a registered dental hygienist who practices outside of a traditional dental office, often in their own clinics or through mobile services, providing personalized care and treatment plans.

Being able to practice independently allows us hygienist to serve the more vulnerable population in our communities, which includes mobile services to senior and long term care homes. I believe that every patient deserves access to oral health care. 🦷 🤍

My favourite patients are the littlest ones 💗. Yesterday I seen Maeve (almost 3 years old) for the second time. At her first appointment we were only able to look in her mouth with the mirror, and at yesterday’s appointment we completed a full cleaning (Hygiene exam, prophy & scaling). So, so proud of her!!

The importance of children’s hygiene appointments lies in several key aspects:

🦷Prevention of Dental Issues: Regular dental hygiene appointments help detect and address potential dental problems early, preventing cavities and decay.
🦷Overall Health and Well-being: Teaching children good hygiene habits from a young age is crucial for their overall health, as it helps prevent the spread of illnesses and boosts their confidence and self-esteem.
🦷Foundation for Good Habits: Good hygiene practices, such as brushing teeth and washing hands, are essential for maintaining overall health and well-being.
🦷Social Life and Confidence: Proper hygiene habits are foundational for a child’s social life and self-confidence, contributing to their overall development.
🦷Practical Tips for Hygiene: Establishing a hygiene routine, including dental care, is vital for children’s health and well-being.

‼️These appointments play a crucial role in ensuring children’s health and development.

With the end of summer nearing, many families are settling back into a routine with an increased focus on healthy habits. Busy summer schedules usually mean delayed appointments, yummy sugary snacks and drinks, and late nights. Between all the camping trips, vacations, and barbecues, it can be difficult to maintain a proper oral hygiene routine.

Let us help you get back into a routine for the upcoming school year! We love to pair a fresh, healthy smile with a fresh start 🦷 ✨ 🪥

Lemon water has become a beloved drink, praised for its refreshing flavor and health benefits, such as boosting digestion and providing a rich source of vitamin C. But lurking behind this trendy beverage lies a potential risk to our dental health 🍋 🥤

Research shows that frequent exposure to acidic drinks, including lemon water, can lead to visible erosion. A study found that regular consumption of acidic beverages correlates with a higher incidence of dental caries (cavities) and tooth erosion!

When the enamel erodes, you may experience:
🦷 Tooth Sensitivity: You might feel discomfort when consuming hot, cold, or sweet foods.
🦷 Increased Cavity Risk: A weakened enamel layer makes your teeth more susceptible to decay.
🦷 Changes in Color: Enamel loss can lead to a yellowish appearance as the underlying dentin becomes exposed.

So, how do we enjoy lemon water while minimizing risks? It’s all about balance and moderation. Here are some quick tips:
🍋 Dilution: Mixing lemon juice with larger amounts of water can help reduce the acidity level.
🍋 Frequency: Limit your intake to prevent prolonged exposure— consider enjoying lemon water as an occasional treat rather than a daily habit.
🍋 Timing: Rinse your mouth with plain water after consuming lemon water to neutralize acids.
🍋 Use a Straw: Drinking through a straw can help limit direct contact between the acidic liquid and your teeth.
🍋 Rinse with Water: Always rinse with plain water afterward to wash away any residual acids.

✨teeth whitening timeline ✨

If you’re thinking about booking your whitening session, here’s exactly what to expect before, during, and after your appointment to get the best (and longest-lasting) results!

🦷 2 months - the day of your appointment:
Book for your routine dental hygiene appointment. This step is crucial to ensuring optimal results! I do require you’ve had your teeth professionally cleaned before teeth whitening.

🦷 1 - 7 days before your appointment:
Start prepping your teeth by increasing your water intake and switching to a sensitivity toothpaste. This helps hydrate your enamel and reduce the chances of sensitivity during your session.

🦷 30 mins - 1 hr before your appointment:
Brush and floss your teeth thoroughly so your whitening gels can work directly on clean enamel — no plaque barrier in the way! It’s suggested to use a non- fluoridated toothpaste the day of your appointment.

🦷 Whitening time:
Sit back, relax, or even take a nap while the whitening system works its magic. You'll leave with a noticeably brighter smile after just one session.

🦷 24 - 48 hrs after your appointment:
Avoid food and drink that can stain the teeth (coffee, red wine, tea, berries), avoid smoking or va**ng and stay hydrated. Your enamel pores are still open, so this step is key to preventing stains.

🦷24 - 48 hrs after your appointment (final shade reveal):
Your teeth will continue to whiten as the pores close, revealing your true final shade.

🦷 After your appointment:
For best results, book your follow-up treatment! This will depend on your initial shade and lifestyle habits.
