So the has come and gone and I’m just now watching the presentations about all of the populations Kinesiologists can help through good, evidence based exercise programs. The presentations, so far, are informative and exciting!
As I’m watching I realize that I’m just becoming more and more saddened by our current healthcare system and the lack of credibility (coming from other heath care professionals) regarding the Kinesiology profession in NL and the Atlantic provinces in Canada.
I’ve been told that other professionals are advised to not use Kinesiologists in their practices because we’re not trained or educated well enough. There are people in every profession who are amazing at their jobs and do loads of courses, stay on top of current research, etc. and there are the others who simply are not great their jobs. So to imply that all Kins aren’t capable of doing well at their job is untrue.
I’m saddened because I believe in exercise, it is the best medicine and yet no doctors are prescribing it, it’s being skimmed over after surgeries or, even worse, completely skipped. As a patient who had a major abdominal surgery to deliver my son, I was helped out of bed by a nurse and given no other instruction whatsoever. Thankfully I had my education, extra courses, and my years of in-clinic experience to help rehabilitate myself after pregnancy and my c-section.
I’m saddened because pregnant women aren’t getting the support they need and deserve, cancer patients, cardiology patients, and SO many more people with chronic disease and mental health problems aren’t getting the best treatment they could, which needs to include exercise.
Kinesiologists would not only benefit patients by improve outcomes and quality of life, but would ultimately lead to less expenses by the healthcare system overall. There is a place for Kinesiologists in the healthcare system.
