Reading is incredibly beneficial. It builds vocabulary, background knowledge, language comprehension, and a love of stories. Reading together at home absolutely matters.

But when a child is struggling to read, especially with decoding, simply asking them to read more is not intervention. Struggling readers need explicit, systematic instruction that teaches them how to read. They need direct teaching in phonemic awareness, sound letter relationships, blending, and word reading so the text can actually make sense.

Once decoding becomes more automatic, reading more becomes empowering instead of exhausting. The goal is not less reading. The goal is the right instruction first, so reading can finally open doors instead of creating frustration.
