The holidays used to feel overwhelming for our family. Late nights, endless gatherings, and overtired kids made the season more stressful than joyful. But one year, we tried something different: *boundaries*.

We started by setting clear expectations: leaving events at 8 PM, saying no to extra parties, and carving out quiet family time. It wasn’t easy at first, but the difference was remarkable. The kids were happier, the meltdowns stopped, and we finally enjoyed the holidays.

If this sounds like what you need, let me know if you’ll be practicing boundary-setting this holiday season. Shoot me an email if you want to dive deeper into the concept of boundaries at home! (info@leonpsychology.ca)

‘I didn’t break it!’ my child blurted out, even though the cookie jar was shattered on the floor. My first instinct is frustration—but then I pause. Why would they feel the need to lie? 🤔

Turns out, lying isn’t always about dishonesty. Sometimes, it’s about fear of punishment, wanting to impress, or simply experimenting with imagination. Understanding this changed how I reacted—and how they responded.

If you’ve ever wondered why kids lie and how to handle it, this breaks it down step-by-step. Because behind every lie, there’s a story.

When Sarah first introduced a reward chart to her 5-year-old, she thought she was doing everything right. But soon, the stickers lost their magic, and her child started asking, ‘What do I get if I do this?’ 😅 That’s when Sarah realized something was off.

Reward charts can be powerful tools for building positive habits—but only when used effectively. By focusing on effort over perfection and celebrating progress meaningfully, Sarah turned things around.

As a mom and neuropsychologist, I know how tempting it can be to say ‘Because I said so,” — but I’ve found that children learn best when they understand the reasons behind rules and boundaries.

In my work, I encourage parents to set expectations in a way that empowers kids to respect and appreciate limits. It’s a way to raise thoughtful, independent thinkers who understand consequences.

When my kids were young, I’d also sometimes catch myself saying things like ‘Wear your jacket’ without an explanation. But I learned that explaining the natural consequence—‘If you’re cold, you won’t enjoy your time outside’—helped them understand and remember. It’s a simple shift that makes a big difference in building independence and resilience.

I’ve often watched my own kids struggle with a challenge, like figuring out a puzzle, and it’s tempting to step in and solve it for them. But resilience isn’t built by easy successes—it grows through the effort and determination we encourage in our children.

I love working with parents to develop resilience in their kids by focusing on boundaries, problem-solving, and praise for their hard work, not just the outcome. It’s incredibly rewarding to see families transform through these small but powerful changes.

If you’d like to explore how this approach could work for your family, read the full blog or book a session to chat with me (link in bio)!

Take some time today for a self-check. Ask yourself the following questions:
-How am I feeling?
-Have I been neglected some aspect of my wellbeing?
-Do I have needs that are not being fufilled?
Then, make a concrete plan for a small step to remedy this. This can be the hardest part; finding extra time in your busy schedule, but it is possible and necessary.
