Colostrum, a baby’s first milk is…
💧nutrient dense
💧highly concentrated
💧has laxative properties to help pass meconium
💧builds a strong immune system
💧immunologic properties to protect and fight illness
💧helps establish a health gut microbiome

Colostrum begins to be produced and stored in the breast around 16 weeks of pregnancy. The birth of the placenta allows for the milk ejection reflux to secrete the milk with stimulation.
The flow of colostrum is slow while allowing baby to learn to coordinate and regulate their suck, swallow and breath coordination during feeding.
It is frequent skin-to-skin and removal of colostrum 8-10 times in the first 24-48 hours that helps to establish and maintain milk supply throughout a breastfeeding journey. The more stimulation the breast get in the early postpartum stage helps promote a high prolactin (milk making hormone) state. Periods longer than 3 hours between breast stimulation and colostrum removal decreases prolactin levels affecting long term milk supply levels.
Successful skin-to-skin and breastfeeding in the first hour after birth sets the stage for long-term breastfeeding success and for appropriate milk supply levels.

Family has been my priority lately and getting everyone feeling better. We have been plagued with virus after virus for 2+ months. Now that we are all better, we are getting out again and I’m getting back online! What a day to start! Happy Family Day everyone!

Does this photo look like your house today?
Mine sure does, actually this is calmer reality of my house if I am truly being honest.
I had a friend tell me “deep breathe, you will figure it out” after both kids had meltdowns this morning.
No matter what stage of parenthood we are in, we have our challenges and we manage them.
A quick walk outside with the dog and a chance to finish my coffee and a deep breathe, my daughters and I made it through the morning.
If you need to chat or vent, I am here, no mater what stage any of us are going through.
