Did you know?
Dogs may shiver for reasons other than feeling cold, including discomfort, stress, or underlying health concerns.

Pay attention if shivering is ongoing or paired with changes in behavior, appetite, or energy.
Keeping them warm, comfortable, and supported goes a long way, and we’re always here to help.

Extreme Cold Reminder ️❄

Very cold, dry air can irritate and narrow airways, making it harder for some pets to breathe.
Pets most at risk include those with respiratory or heart conditions and short-nosed breeds like Bulldogs and Pugs.

Keep outdoor trips brief, skip long walks, use coats when needed, and keep pets warm indoors.

Indoor Enrichment Tips ❄️

Cold weather doesn’t have to mean boredom, for dogs or cats. On days when outdoor time is limited, indoor enrichment like food puzzles, snuffle mats, and scent-based games can provide valuable mental stimulation. For cats, activities such as treat puzzles, hide-and-seek toys, and encouraging natural hunting behaviours help keep minds active. These activities can reduce restlessness and boredom while keeping pets happy, calm, and engaged throughout the colder months.

It’s not just people who feel the cold! Pets can develop frostbite as well. Areas with less fur and blood flow, such as ears, tails, and paw pads, are especially vulnerable in freezing temperatures.
Shorter walks, proper winter gear, and a quick paw check after being outside can make a big difference in protecting your pet this winter.

Dr. Ewing will be off for the next 8 weeks as she heads into knee surgery and recovery this week. While we’re definitely going to miss her around the clinic, we know she’ll be back stronger than ever!
Let’s send her all our best wishes for a smooth surgery, lots of rest, and a speedy recovery!

And as always, our dedicated team of doctors and staff will be here to continue providing the exceptional care your pets deserve.

After completing annual bloodwork, we noticed this kitty’s glucose levels were a bit higher than expected.

To help us monitor more closely, we placed a Freestyle Libre continuous glucose monitor.

This allows us to track glucose trends over time with fewer needle pokes, making monitoring easier and less stressful for our patient as we move forward.

Annual bloodwork plays an important role in keeping track of your pet’s health. If it’s your pet’s first time, these results also serve as a valuable baseline to compare against in the future.
