Book of the Month: More than a Body

This is an incredibly powerful book that encourages women to challenge the way they have been taught to view their bodies. Our society tends to teach girls from a young age that their body’s worth depends on its appearance and that the way you look is one of the most important things about you. We are taught that there is a certain ‘right’ way to look (often based on heavily edited and unrealistic images seen in the media) and there are an enormous number of companies looking to sell us all sorts of products to help us try to look more like this unattainable standard.

In “More than a Body” the authors challenge us to shift our focus from how our bodies look, to what they are capable of doing and to recognize the role of the media’s beauty standard in the way we view our bodies. It encourages readers to spend less time viewing their body and more time being full present within their body. I hope you enjoy this read as much as I did!

Back from the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians 40th Annual Conference in Palm Springs!

It was a fantastic celebration of naturopathic medicine over the past 40 years. I got the opportunity to share some of my research on nutrition and anxiety and a systematic review that is in progress.

I also got to explore Joshua Tree National Park on my last day. Very hot!

Book Recommendation: The Five Minute Journal!

In a world that’s saturated with media and difficult news stories, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed or disconnected from what truly matters. That’s where The Five Minute Journal comes in—a simple yet powerful tool designed to help you cultivate gratitude, focus, and a more positive mindset in just a few minutes each day.

This guided journal is based on principles from positive psychology and is structured to take only five minutes of your morning and evening. Each day begins with prompts like “I am grateful for…” and “What would make today great?”—encouraging you to start your day with intention and appreciation. At night, you’re prompted to reflect on what went well and how you could improve, helping you process your day and build self-awareness.

What makes this journal so effective is its simplicity. It doesn’t require lengthy writing or deep philosophical musings—just a moment to pause, reflect and write a few lines. And yet, over time, the habit of pausing to notice the good can shift your mindset in profound ways. Research shows that regular gratitude practice can improve mood, reduce stress, and even support better sleep.

Five minutes a day is a great start to feeling a little more grounded—and a lot more grateful.

New Research Alert: This new publication reports on the findings of a project conducted at Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine. We worked with Canadian Naturopathic Doctors to design a course on Evidence-Based Practice tailored to the needs of the profession. We evaluated the course and found that participants significantly increased their skill and knowledge about using evidence in clinical practice. This work demonstrates a high degree of interest among NDs in refining scientific literacy skills and using the best available evidence to inform clinical care. https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0324452
