What Does an Advanced Foot Care Nurse Do?
A foot care nurse provides clinical, preventative foot care—especially for clients who are considered high-risk.
During an appointment, they will:
• Perform a full foot assessment (skin, nails, circulation, sensation)
• Trim and manage thick, fungal, or ingrown toenails
• Reduce calluses and corns safely (to prevent pressure and breakdown)
• Check for signs of ulcers, infections, or pressure areas
• Assess circulation and may perform tests like ABI (Ankle-Brachial Index) or measure for compression stockings
• Provide education on daily foot care, footwear, and prevention
They also:
• Use sterile/single-use instruments for safety
• Create a care plan based on your individual needs
• Monitor changes over time to catch issues early, and can refer patients to a podiatrist if they see the need for further specialized treatment
Care can often be provided in-home, making it accessible and comfortable—especially in Alberta winters.
At Sole Foot Care & Wellness, our goal is prevention, early detection, and keeping you safely on your feet.
