The people we elect on October 19th will be asked to make critical decisions that affect whether or not the natural systems we rely on will continue to survive and sustain us.

Our forum aims to provide an opportunity for community members to ask questions about where candidates running for political parties represented in the Legislature, and the parties, stand on key issues.

Let your voice be heard.

This is your last chance to send your questions for the candidates in advance of the meeting. Please send an email with your question to communications@thescca.ca prior to noon today.

Happy May Day! ๐ŸŒฑ Did you know that there is a long tradition of May Day celebrations on the Sunshine Coast, started by the early Finnish settlers? The first May Day events were held at Steinbrunner's ranch in Gibsons, and the whole community was invited! This picture was taken a few years later at Andy Wilander's property, near present-day Payne and Cemetery Road, Gibsons.

โ„น๏ธ State of Local Emergency Declared Due to Drought

This afternoon, Darnelda Siegers, Board Chair of the Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) ordered a State of Local Emergency (SOLE) due to the ongoing drought period and associated risk to water supply for users on the Chapman Water System. The District of Sechelt and the shรญshรกlh Nation have also ordered a SOLE.

At this time, the SCRD has secured water supply through to early November. The SOLE is being put in place to further secure and expand water supply should there be no significant rainfall on the Sunshine Coast in the coming weeks.

The first order of the SOLE can be found linked here:http://hh3.scrd.ca/files/File/Community/EmergencyOps/2022-Oct-17%20Drought%20Order%201%20-%20SCRD_1.pdf

The first order affects several large non-essential commercial uses of water including:
โ€ข Swimming Pools
โ€ข Breweries, Cideries and Distilleries
โ€ข Businesses that bottle water
โ€ข Non-medical cannabis production
โ€ข Businesses that involve the transport, processing, cleaning, installation or repair of concrete, cement, asphalt, gravel, or aggregate.

If your business involves any of the above, you are asked to review the order. You must cease use of treated drinking water from the Chapman Water System by Tuesday, October 18 at 11:59 p.m. SCRD staff will reach out directly to affected businesses to make them aware of this requirement.

This order will also affect the Sechelt Aquatic Centre, which will close on Tuesday night until the order is lifted. Further information on extended hours at pools in Gibsons and Pender Harbour will be issued tomorrow along with direction for those who have swimming lessons booked at the Sechelt Aquatic Centre in the coming weeks.

An update on community use, ongoing actions through the SCRDโ€™s Emergency Operations Centre and water supply projects will be provided tomorrow, on October 18.
