                                            DAVID LYONS
Apr 1943-Oct 2025
My dad was born on the same day as his father Keith, April 25th, in 1943. He was born profoundly deaf and communicated through sign language. From a young age he was boarding at what is now known as the Royal New South Wales Institution for Deaf and Blind Children. It was visited by Helen Keller on her post WWII educational tour to destimigatize and dispel the “dumbness” from being deaf and/or blind.
His holidays were spent camping on beaches under the stars or exploring the outback with his adventurous uncle Alfred.
Family time was spent with his grandparents in Lake Macquarie, his parents and siblings Malcolm, Sandra and Peter at the home in Merewether Beach, and later Prince Albert St, Mosman.
He was the luckiest man alive at the time to marry my beautiful, kind and talented mum, Lynne and together they created my sister, Zara and me.
He had a life long love of fossicking that took him away from his family and on travels all over Australia in his Ford Falcon XG. He eventually settled in the remote desert town of Coolgardie, Western Australia, where he wore a hat with corks dangling off it because, yes, you really do need them to keep the flies off your face in the outback.
Dad passed away 3 days ago with my sister at his bedside and me on video chat. I feel so grateful the three of us were together, supporting one another for his last breaths.
RIP Dad.
When I think of you now I see the bright light of the sun rising over the red desert sands.
Open to new potentials, always with positivity and unshakable faith in your beliefs.
Thank you
For life
For our family
For your adventurous spirit
For your resilience
For your intelligence
For your strong will
I love you forever
I really hope that you can hear the angels singing. 💖
