Paperwork of a Ghost: A Survivor's Blueprint
Today, I had the opportunity to meet with local writer, photographer, and social entrepreneur Kiara Markle for an inspiring conversation about her book of poetry named Paperwork of a Ghost: A Survivor's Blueprint.
Kiara shared with me her upcoming poetry collection. While some of the poems in this collection were over twelve years in the making, they found their final shape following Kiaraβs stay at Artemis House in early 2024. It was only after transitioning out of second-stage housing that she began the βpaperworkβ of her life β transforming more than a decade of survival into a finished blueprint for advocacy and healing.
Kiara, a resident of Goderich, wanted to share her journey with me and her commitment to ensuring this project serves the very community that helped shape her resilience.
This raw and emotional poetry collection documents a 20-year journey through childhood trauma, abuse β physical, mental, sexual, and familial β as well as familial addiction. Funded by the Huron-Perth Children's Aid Society, the project serves as a Survivorβs Blueprint β a tangible resource for resilience, awareness, and hope.
One quote from Kiara that stayed with me was:
βA blunt reality of starting over from scratch and the endurance required to remain standing.β
Stay tuned as I will be sharing details about the book launch, expected to take place in mid-September at The Bee's Knees in downtown Goderich. In support of the community, $4 from every book sale will be donated to Artemis Huron.
In the photo, Kiara and I are holding a drawing of the book cover designed by Doreen Lalor and Mary Hurley.
Thank you, Kiara, for reaching out and for trusting me enough to share your journey.
My Mom always told me, βDonβt judge a book by its cover. Open the book and get to know what is inside the book.β
Todayβs meeting was a reminder of the incredible strength of the human spirit, the importance of compassion, and the power of never giving up.
