As we step into a new year, I want to take a moment to thank you for allowing me to be part of your journey.

The start of a new year often brings reflection on what has been hard, what has changed, and what we are still carrying forward. It can also bring hope, intention, and a quiet sense of possibility. Wherever you find yourself right now, please know that there is no “right” way to enter a new year. You don’t need to have clarity, resolutions, or everything figured out.

This coming year is not about pressure or perfection. It’s about continuing to show up for yourself in ways that feel honest, sustainable, and aligned with your needs. Sometimes that looks like growth and forward movement. Other times, it looks like rest, boundaries, and self-compassion. All of it matters.

Thank you for the trust you place in this space and for the work you do, both in session and beyond it. I look forward to continuing to support you in the year ahead.

Wishing you a new year filled with steadiness, kindness toward yourself, and moments of connection and ease.

As the holiday season arrives, I want to take a moment to acknowledge that Christmas can bring up many different emotions. While it’s often portrayed as a joyful and connected time, it can also come with pressure, expectations, grief, exhaustion, or complicated family dynamics.

I want to gently remind you that it is okay to have boundaries at Christmas.

It is okay to say no.
It is okay to leave early, arrive late, or not attend at all.
It is okay to protect your energy, your mental health, and your well-being.

If this season feels heavy, please know that you are not alone, and that whatever you are feeling is valid. You are allowed to move through the holidays in a way that feels safest and healthiest for you.

Wishing you a gentle Christmas, one that honours your needs, your limits, and your capacity. May you find moments of rest, connection (in whatever form feels right), and kindness toward yourself.

Booking System Update

I wanted to share a quick administrative update.

I’ve transitioned to a new Jane booking system under J Keough Counselling Services to make booking and managing appointments easier for clients.

All existing sessions continue as usual, with no changes to care or scheduling.

The new system allows clients to:
✔️ Book, reschedule, or cancel appointments online
✔️ Receive automatic appointment reminders
✔️ Manage payments and access receipts securely

Existing, returning, and new clients will be asked to complete their profile and sign current consent forms when booking.

Thank you for your understanding during this transition.

Why Couples Who Come Together Later in Life Benefit from Counselling

When couples form later in life, they bring a lifetime of experiences, values, and responsibilities to the relationship. While this creates depth and wisdom, it can also introduce unique challenges. Counselling provides a space to strengthen your connection and ensure that this new chapter starts on a strong foundation.

Here’s why:

Blended histories: Each partner comes with a personal story — previous relationships, families, careers, and patterns that shape how they connect. Counselling helps you understand and integrate these histories in healthy ways.

Clear communication: Later-in-life couples often know what they want — but expressing needs or navigating differences can still be difficult. Counselling helps improve communication and fosters mutual respect.

Merging lives and families: Combining households, finances, or adult children’s dynamics can be complex. Counselling helps you plan thoughtfully and manage change together.

Healing old wounds: Past hurts can influence present relationships. Counselling offers a safe place to address unresolved emotions, so they don’t interfere with the bond you’re building now.

Intentional connection: At this stage, love is a choice. Counselling helps you be intentional about maintaining closeness, intimacy, and teamwork as you build a shared future.

Investing in counselling early on isn’t about fixing problems — it’s about building a healthy foundation for a fulfilling and lasting partnership.

Does this resonate with you?
If you see yourself in any of what I’ve shared, you don’t have to face it alone. Couples counselling can help you strengthen your connection, navigate differences, and create a relationship built on understanding and trust.

Reaching out can be the first step toward feeling supported and finding a way forward.

Welcome Back to Exploring Life’s Challenges Together

Each week in this series, I’m highlighting a common life challenge and sharing insights to give you a glimpse into what it might be like to work with me in therapy. My goal is to offer encouragement, reflection, and a sense that you’re not alone in what you’re facing.

These posts aren’t meant to replace therapy, but to spark awareness and hope as you consider your own path forward.

Today, we’ll explore divorce.

“Now That I’ve Said That Out Loud…”

It’s one of the most common things I hear in therapy and it’s often followed by a deep breath, a moment of clarity, or even tears.

Saying something out loud can change everything.

When we give our thoughts and emotions words, they become real enough to understand, examine, and work through. What once felt overwhelming, confusing, or tangled starts to make sense.

Processing out loud helps you:
Gain perspective — thoughts that swirl in your mind sound different when spoken.
Organize emotions — saying things aloud helps you notice patterns and uncover what’s really beneath the surface.
Feel seen and understood — having someone truly listen can make even the heaviest feelings lighter.

You don’t have to have everything figured out before you speak it. Therapy is the place to find your words and, through them, your way forward.

Does this resonate with you?

If you see yourself in any of what I’ve shared, you don’t have to face it alone. Reaching out can be the first step toward feeling supported and finding clarity.
