Happy New Year!
2022 ended on a high note with our 3 wonderful Midwives welcoming 3 beautiful baby boys in 3 lovely home births on December 30th!
It is always so fun to look back on our stats at the end of the year, and 2022 was one for the books!

Cool fact- Queen Elizabeth had 3VBAC!

❇️Have you had an HBAC? How was it, and is there anything you’d share for someone considering it?

❇️ Fun fact: Queen Elizabeth gave birth to Prince Charles via C-Section and went on to have 3 HBAC’s. When labor began she was put in what they called a Twilight Birth. It was a form of childbirth first used in the early twentieth century in Germany in which drugs caused women in labor to enter a state of sleep prior to giving birth and awake from childbirth with no recollection of the procedure, however after many hours they performed a C-Section to bring Charles earthside.

❇️In the 1950s only about 3% of births ended in a Caesarean section. Today we are looking at approx 31.8% 🤯

❇️So many people ask us about HBAC (Home Birth After Cesarean) and what the safety is surrounding that option, and does it increase my chances of having a vaginal birth?

❇️The decision to give birth at home is a personal choice. Although it may be the right choice for some it may not be for others.

❇️Home births are becoming more common, especially home birth after Cesarean (HBAC). Laboring at home is common, but more and more parents plan to stay home for the birth itself.

❇️In 2017, almost 1.4% of births in the U.S. happened at home or a birth center, up by 50% since 2004.

❇️There are studies that show home births lead to less interventions and fewer cesarean sections. However there are no current, conclusive Vaginal birth after cesarean/ homebirth studies to date. There is not enough data to compile showing how those risks compare specifically for VBAC parents.

Did you know…

The provincial and national average for cesarean births is approximately 30% of all births.

The Midwives of GP cesarean rate for 2021 was 12%

The Midwives of GP cesarean rate so far for 2022 is 8%.

Midwives do not perform c-sections, however if our clients require one during birth, their Midwife can still attend the birth, and assuming a healthy delivery for all, Midwives can assume care again for both mom and baby following the birth.

Under safe circumstances both Midwives and Doctors can offer clients the option of Trial of Labour After Cesarean.

That's a wrap!

I finished up my last May birth a couple weeks ago and it was so nice to turn my phone off and not have back up to my back up for childcare. I love being a doula and to keep doing that I need to take some time off to rest, recoup and focus on my family. I am looking forward to spending lots of time with them this summer traveling out of cell service and enjoying God's beautiful creation.

I may do a couple posts here and there and maybe throw in a blog or two if there are enough rainy days to keep us inside. 😉 This fall will look a little different here as well so stay tuned for that.

Let me know if there is any specific topic you would like to know more about and I will work on some research this summer.

What sets The Mini Clover apart from other consignment or gently used maternity shops? I'd like to think our customer service is pretty on par ;) but I'd have to say the quality of the items in store allows us to have something for everyone. And starting today I'm giving all consignors a $25 gift card to be used on anything at The Mini Clover or The Clover Co. (with a minimum of 10 items brought in on consignment). This will back date to all consignors who have brought items in since we opened! Did you know we allow you to use your banked money on anything in the store? You can use it on nursing items, bath bombs, candles...you name it. Anything just for you or grab a gift for someone else. Or you get paid out in full after 2 months. Come in and check out all the fantastic items in store!

This day comes with mixed emotions for me. I am excited for all the women who will once again get the support they need but I have deep sorrow for all the women who were denied it recently. It should not have been that way.

You read that right, AFTER your due date.

Most first time mothers go 5 days past their due date on average. Treating your due date as more of a guess than a fixed time can help with stress and anxiety.

Some things I suggest to my clients are:
🍰 Date night at your favourite restaurant.
🚶‍♀️Going for a walk with a friend. (Bonus if you do some curb walking!)
👐 Get a message, facial or pedicure.

Anything you love doing that isn't hard to cancel will work.

I tried to organize all the pictures on our computer into year and month files. I weirdly enjoy doing stuff like that when I have the time but it is still not done as my boys went against the grain on that one. 😀

Shout out to all the amazing doulas I know that have persevered and advocated to support your clients with all the changes this year.

How can a doula make a difference in birth?

🌿 Less likely to need medical pain relief.
🌿 Less likely to need a cesarean. (39% less 😲)
🌿 Help shorten labour.
🌿 Less likely for baby to have low APGAR scores.
🌿 Less likely to be dissatisfied with birth experience.

Many in Alberta are aware that the demand for currently exceeds available funding in the province.

While we will continue to advocate the need for increased services in our community, we do encourage all who would like a midwife to request care through our website, as this helps us demonstrate need and supports future workforce planning.

Grey hair! Oh no!! 😱

I stopped dying my hair about 3 years ago as I didn’t want the upkeep or expense. My husband loves the silver streaking in my hair and wants me to keep them. I am undecided, maybe one day I will die them again, maybe not?

The obsession our culture has with looking young is damaging to us and our children. There is nothing wrong with wanting to look good but I don’t mind looking my age. I think our children, especially young girls need to see aging as a beautiful process not something to be feared.

Bring on the grey!!!

I cannot wait to be a sassy old lady and have grandchildren I can spoil and impart my wisdom of age too.
