Mike's Tour Alberta for Cancer Fundraiser July 19-20 2024 Committed to doing my part with raising funds to fight cancer My Story

Michael Joostema

Like so many, Cancer can hit us pretty close to home.

My family has had a couple of face to face encounter with this terrible disease. I lost my sister Jennifer to cancer in 2006. Just when you think that’s it, my family was under attack once again but this time these individuals weren’t going to let it win, at least not yet. My father Peter battled cancer in 1999, my father in-law Omer battled cancer in 2011, my sister Monica battled cancer in 2022, and my beautiful wife Carinne battled cancer in 2021/2022. These warriors in my family put up a fight and won. And this doesn’t even account for all the friends, co-workers, and people connected to us one way or another

For the rest of us that were not affected by cancer, some would say you’re lucky. Well we were not lucky. These are our loved ones and friends. And that pure helplessness of not being able to make it better, or knowing in some cases even all the technology and medication can’t beat this terrible disease when it becomes Terminal. The best we can do is support, comfort, and just plainly be there at all times. With all this, I have decided to act as an aggressor, just like cancer itself. By being the aggressor I will do my part to help raise funds for The Alberta Cancer Foundation. In doing so, I have joined a new team that is presently being assembled called the Grande Prairie Cancer Centre. On July 22-23 2023 I will be cycling 200km in a 2 day event to raise funds which will help fight cancer so that those affected stand stronger chance. I will be working with our team captain create some fund raising events. Here in Grande Prairie we have a brand new hospital with some of the newest technology one has to offer and extremely fortunate that it also has its very one Cancer Centre. With this new Cancer Centre, the people of Grande Prairie and the Peace Region no longer have to travel to Edmonton or across province to Calgary. This has a big impact on affected families that struggle to cover the costs of long travel, hotel stays, and just being away from home long periods of times. How are your Donations used? Happy New Year!

I am working with The Embridge Tour Alberta for Cancer to raise funds for my 200km bicycle ride on July 21-22 2023 in Calgary. My personal goal to reach is $2500.00.

You can simply donate by accessing my site via scanning your cell phone camera over the QR Code and then clicking the link. This is a secure site governed by the Alberta Cancer Foundation.
This donation site is setup for Debit Credit Card or Credit Card.

If you do not have a credit card, I can accept an e-transfer or cash at fundraising events and in turn use my credit card for the donation amount given. I will use your name and email so you will take credit for the donation and receive an emailed receipt with a CRA registration number so that you can claim the donation on your tax return. You can also dedicate your donation in honor or in memory of someone.
No amount is too small. If you do not wish to donate I would love to hear words of encouragement towards my goal.
