LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE
There has been a lot of interest in lymphatic drainage massage, and as a Complete Decongestive Therapist I wanted share some information about it.
Gentle, rhythmic movements:
The technique involves a series of hand movements, including stationary circles, pumps, and rotary movements, that create a gentle pumping effect on the lymphatic system.
Directional pressure:
Pressure is applied towards the direction of lymph flow to encourage fluid to move away from the affected area.
Skin stretching:
The technique includes stretching the skin to help open lymphatic vessels and promote fluid movement.
Light pressure:
The pressure used is generally light to avoid compressing lymphatic vessels and hinder flow.
Benefits of the Vodder technique:
Reduced swelling:
By promoting lymph flow, the technique can help reduce swelling and edema.
Improved immune function:
Lymph drainage can help clear toxins and waste products, supporting immune system function.
Pain relief:
The technique can help relieve pain associated with inflammation or muscle tension.
Relaxation:
The gentle movements can have a relaxing and calming effect on the nervous system.
Applications of the Vodder technique:
Lymphedema: A condition where lymphatic fluid builds up in tissues, causing swelling, often in the arms or legs.
Edema: Swelling due to fluid buildup in tissues.
Pain management: Can help relieve pain associated with various conditions.
Post-surgical recovery: May help with tissue healing and reduce swelling after surgery.
Chronic sinusitis: The technique was initially developed to treat chronic sinusitis.
Other conditions: May also be used for other conditions like migraine, skin conditions, and stress.
