This winter in Alberta, we've seen a heartbreaking number of tragedies and catastrophic injuries involving drivers who pulled over on the side of highways.

It's an important reminder: the shoulder of a busy road is never truly safe. A damaged rim or flat tire can be replaced — a life cannot.

If your vehicle is still drivable, keep going slowly to the nearest exit, gas station, or side street. If you must stop, pull as far onto the shoulder as possible, away from curves and hills, and turn on your hazards immediately. If you have to get out, use the passenger-side door and move well away from traffic.

And to everyone driving: slow down and move over when you see flashing lights or stopped vehicles.
