If you can lead your horse, you can load your horse. 🚛💨
Moving day is high-stress for everyone, but for a horse, being asked to step into a dark, enclosed box and be driven away is completely unnatural. It’s the ultimate test of the bond you’ve built.
Today I’m loading two horses at the same time. Ten has historically struggled with loading. People often ask for the "secret" to trailer loading, but the truth is simple:
Loading is just advanced leading.
If you don’t have the "draw" and the leadership in the arena, you won't have it at the trailer. Here are three things I keep in mind to be the anchor my horses need:
• Check Your Internal Compass: Horses can feel your heart rate from 4 feet away. If your anxiety is spiked, they assume the trailer is a trap. Before you even walk to the door, take a breath. Be the calm, quiet leader they want to follow, not the frustrated one they feel they have to escape.
• Listen to the Communication: If they stop at the trailer, they aren't being "bad." They are communicating. Are they scared? Are they unsure of their footing? Instead of getting upset, take a second to look through their eyes. What are they trying to tell you in that moment?
• Be the Safe Harbor: It takes an incredible amount of trust for a horse to allow themselves to be locked into a trailer. You have to be the source of safety. When you are 100% present and grounded, that "box" becomes just another place to be with you.
Don’t be afraid to take a breath, think, and reset. Leadership isn't about force; it’s about being the person your horse chooses to trust when things get scary.
