In Memory of Ellen Archibald

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our dear friend and colleague, Ellen Archibald. Ellen played an essential role in helping bring the Caribou Centre to life, from offering her support in the earliest days to rolling up her sleeves and helping with renos in the building. Her belief in the Centre and the families it would serve helped build the foundation we still stand on today.

Ellen was one of our first RCMP child forensic interviewers at the Centre and even stepped into the role of coordinator for a time. She approached every child, every family, and every coworker with unwavering kindness, compassion, and calm reassurance. Those who had the privilege of working alongside her know how much warmth, dignity, and care she brought into every interaction.

Ellen made a profound and lasting impact on our team, our community, and the children she supported. Her legacy will continue to shape the Caribou Centre for years to come.

We will miss her greatly.

A big congrats to Jason, our onsite child forensic interviewer, for completing his Polygraph Examiners Course! Grande Prairie Police Service

Detective Jason McCormick of the Grande Prairie Police Service is now one of only eight police polygraph examiners in the province of Alberta.

Detective McCormick completed the prestigious Canadian Police College Polygraph Examiners Course, an internationally recognized program that trains experienced investigators from police, military, and intelligence agencies around the world. The program involves an intensive academic phase, supervised internships, and an extensive certification period spanning nearly a year.

Polygraph examinations are a specialized investigative tool, typically used in the later stages of serious investigations, to help assess truthfulness, narrow investigative focus, and support interview strategies.

As Detective McCormick progresses through his certification under the mentorship of the Edmonton Police Service Polygraph Unit, his expertise will enhance GPPS investigative capacity, support major case investigations, strengthen interview and statement analysis practices, and contribute to integrity-based hiring through pre-employment polygraph examinations.

This achievement represents a significant addition to policing expertise in our region and reflects GPPS’s commitment to professional excellence, advanced training, and public trust.

Congratulations, Detective McCormick!

Improving coping strategies, fostering resiliency, and processing trauma for children and youth.

The Caribou Child & Youth Centre is a child advocacy centre that serves children and youth (under 18) who have experienced sexual, physical, or psychological abuse, exploitation, and/or neglect. We also work with those who have witnessed other types of trauma or violence.

We have a committed, comprehensive multidisciplinary team that works together to provide the best possible services for children and their families. Intervention and treatment in child abuse cases is strengthened when agencies work toward common goals, which include support services for the child, and holding offenders accountable. Our team consists of: RCMP, Child Family Services, Pace, Victim Services, as well as Crown Prosecution.

The Caribou Centre was designed to provide a safe and comfortable environment where children could disclose abuse, thus, reducing the trauma and anxiety for these young people. The centre seeks to provide children and their families with one single point of contact to assist them throughout the process; from in initial disclosure, through investigation, court proceedings, and any ongoing support or therapeutic treatment that is necessary. Our goal is to ensure that children are not re-victimized by the very systems designed to protect them.
