Coping mechanisms are ways we use to cope with stress and anxiety.

There are healthy ways of coping, like taking a walk or talking to a friend. There are also unhealthy ways of coping, like substance abuse or self-harm.

One common unhealthy coping mechanism is avoidance. Avoidance is an attempt to avoid painful emotions by not dealing with them. This can be harmful because it keeps us from dealing with our feelings, which can make them worse when they finally do come up.

Another common unhealthy coping mechanism is repression. Repression is when we try to push our painful emotions down into our unconscious mind so that we don't have to think about them or feel them consciously. This can be harmful because it means those emotions aren't being processed properly in the first place—and they may come back up later in different ways that are even harder to deal with!

To break free from unhealthy coping mechanisms like these, you need some help from someone who has been through what you're going through: a therapist! A therapist will help guide you through the process of identifying your negative thought patterns and behaviors and replacing them with healthier ones that will lead to more positive results in your life overall.

3 things you should know about me:

- As a psycotherapist, my goal is to help my clients feel strong, confident and become the authors of their own lives!

- I hope to rewrite the narrative from “I have to be OK”, to “It’s OK to not be OK sometimes”.

- I applaud anyone who participates in mental health services because taking that first step is not always easy.

We all have bad days. We all have moments where we feel like we're not good enough. We all have times when we feel like there's no way out of the darkness, or that it might be easier to just let go than to keep trying.

But here's the thing: when you're feeling like this, it means that you're human. It means that there's something inside of you that needs healing, and healing takes time and effort—and sometimes a lot of both. So give yourself some space to breathe, take care of yourself physically and mentally, and do whatever it takes to get through this moment in your life as best as possible. Because even though it feels like there's no way out right now, there is one—and it starts with believing that you deserve better than what you're experiencing right now.

You are not broken, and you can heal.

I've been thinking about what it means to be "broken" lately.

I've learned that when we think of ourselves as broken, we are not seeing ourselves for who we truly are.

We are all just human beings, trying to navigate this life and find our way. We have ups and downs, but so does everyone else. And when we see others struggling with their own challenges, it doesn't mean that they're broken. It means they're human! And that's okay!

When you look at yourself in the mirror each morning, do you see a person who is broken? If so, I want you to know something: YOU ARE NOT BROKEN! You can heal—it just takes time and patience. The first step is believing that it's possible.

So many of us have experienced trauma, whether we've experienced it ourselves or we've witnessed it in others. Trauma can leave us feeling like we're broken, or that there's no way to heal from what we've been through. But the truth is, our brains are wired for survival, meaning that when something traumatic happens to us, our brains will shut down in order to protect us from the pain of processing what happened. This means that sometimes even when we try really hard to process what happened to us, we still can't get there—because our brain is literally preventing us from doing so!

This doesn't mean there's something wrong with you; it just means that your brain is protecting you! If you feel stuck in therapy right now because you're not making progress toward healing, please don't give up hope! You may need extra support from a professional who understands trauma and how it affects our brains—someone who can help guide your healing process instead of pushing against your natural instincts. Reach out to us at our office if this sounds like something that might be helpful for you!

Sometimes, our clients want to know if we'll be taking notes during our sessions. It's a common worry - there have been too many pop culture references showing indifferent therapists busy scribbling notes during sessions in a confusing, judgement way.

Here's the thing: we do not take notes during a session. After ever session, we do complete a brief therapy note outlining the presenting concerns and plan moving forward. These notes are kept confidential and stored in a safe, secure manner. Limits of confidentiality apply and these will be reviewed during your first session, as outlined in our Privacy and Confidentiality Statement.
