Have you ever heard of Dry Needling?
What is Dry Needling?
While it might sound quite intimidating, dry needling is a safe and effective treatment technique based on scientific evidence and research. The technique uses a “dry” needle (one without medication) inserted into tight areas/bands of the muscle, tendon or ligament.
What are the benefits?
It is most often used to treat muscular pain, tension and dysfunction. It can also be used to treat sinus, headaches and nerve-related pain. Dry needling can decrease tension in muscles, improve range of motion, break down scar tissue, increase blood flow to the area, and reduce local and referred pain.
Who can perform Dry needling?
Physiotherapists have to obtain specific post-graduate education and training to perform dry needling. Our physiotherapists here at True North Physiotherapy are all trained and experienced in performing dry needling!!
What kind of needles are used?
Dry needling involves using a thin, sterile filiform needle.
Should you have Dry Needling?
It is important to understand that dry needling is one of many techniques that your physiotherapist may use in your management. Your physiotherapist may decide to use this technique on you after performing a complete assessment, discussing the benefits and side-effects, as well as answering any questions you may have. Dry needling can have great outcomes when combined with other treatment modalities, such as massage, exercise & joint mobilizations.
