One of the questions we hear from patients is: “What shoes do you recommend?”

While we do not sell footwear at our clinic, we do like sharing reputable resources when we come across them. This recent article from EatingWell highlights several well-regarded walking and treadmill shoes, including:

Brooks Ghost 17
Hoka Clifton 10
New Balance Fresh Foam X
ASICS Gel-Nimbus 28

There are also helpful tips on what to look for when buying shoes, such as cushioning, support, fit, stability, and comfort.

This is not an exhaustive list, but it does provide a solid starting point for anyone researching supportive walking shoes.

Whether you’re on a incline or strolling, walking on a treadmill requires supportive shoes. Podiatrists share their top recommendations for the best shoes for treadmill walking. Get the link in the comments 👟⤵

Living with diabetes means your feet deserve extra attention every single day. Nerve damage, foot ulcers, and serious complications can develop quietly before you ever notice something is wrong — which is exactly why staying ahead of it matters so much.

Do a quick self-check of your feet daily, and do not put off bringing any changes to your care team. Whether it is your family doctor, nurse practitioner, or another member of your health team, we want to hear from you the moment something seems off. A small concern caught early is far easier to manage than one that has been ignored.

Your feet carry you through life. Take care of them.

It’s Limb Loss and Limb Difference Awareness Month! 💛

If you have diabetes, taking care of your feet is crucial for preventing complications like nerve damage, ulcers and amputation.

Don’t wait until it’s too late; do daily foot exams yourself (check out Caring for Your Feet: Safe Foot Care if You Have Diabetes to learn how) and get your feet checked regularly by an expert. https://www.woundscanada.ca/docman/public/patient-or-caregiver/1728-home-safe-df-care-1942e/file

If you looked outside this past month and thought "sandal season feels very far away," you're not wrong! Between the snowfall and the freezing rain, Northern Ontario has kept us on our toes lately (pun intended 😄). But spring is stubborn, and it always wins. As warmer days get closer, now's a great time to think about getting ahead of things like nail fungus or plantar warts before sandal season arrives. We're here when you're ready! 🌼

🎵 Bob Marley. 36 years old. Gone too soon.

In 1977, a lesion under Bob Marley's right big toenail was mistaken for a soccer injury. By the time it was correctly identified as acral lentiginous melanoma — a rare and aggressive form of skin cancer — it had already begun to spread.

Marley declined amputation of the toe. The cancer spread to his brain, liver, and lungs. He passed away in May 1981 at just 36 years old.

The lesson? Early detection saves lives.

Melanoma can hide in places you'd never think to look — under toenails, between toes, and on the soles of your feet. Areas that rarely see sunlight and are easy to overlook.

👣 When did you last take a close look at your feet?

If you notice anything suspicious — an unusual spot, a dark streak under a nail, or a mole that's changed — see your family doctor right away.

At Northern Ontario Foot & Ankle Clinic our podiatrist sees your feet up close at every visit, and we're always happy to point you in the right direction. 🦶

👣 Think you didn’t break a bone in your foot because you can still walk on it? Think again.

A common myth is that if you can put weight on an injured foot or ankle, it can’t be broken. Unfortunately, that isn’t always true.

Many fractures, including stress fractures and certain breaks in the foot’s 26 bones, can still allow you to walk, often with pain, swelling, or tenderness.

The only way to know for sure is with a proper medical assessment and imaging, such as an X-ray.
Catching a fracture sooner can help prevent longer recovery times and further complications.

👣 Foot pain is easy to brush off at first… until it starts changing how you move, stand, or get through your day.

That discomfort is often a signal, not something to push through.

At Northern Ontario Foot and Ankle Clinic, your assessment and diagnosis are done by a podiatrist, helping identify the root cause early and accurately.

Getting it looked at early can make a big difference and help avoid longer-term issues.

⚡ When lingering foot pain doesn’t respond to rest, it may be time for a different approach.

Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive treatment used to stimulate healing in chronic foot and heel conditions that haven’t improved with basic care alone. By delivering targeted acoustic waves to the affected area, this therapy encourages blood flow and tissue repair at the source of pain.

At Northern Ontario Foot & Ankle, shockwave therapy is used as part of a carefully considered treatment plan—not a one-size-fits-all solution. For the right patient, it can help reduce pain and improve function without injections or surgery.
