Controller
Finlandia Village – Sudbury Finnish Rest Home Society
Status: Permanent Full-Time
Pay: $67.71 - $73.24 per hour
Schedule: Monday to Friday

Position Summary
The Controller supports person-centred care by promoting the comfort, safety, and quality of life of residents at Finlandia Nursing Home and Finlandia Village. Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Controller is responsible for planning, directing, and overseeing all financial operations, including accounting functions and the supervision of accounting staff. This role ensures sound financial management, regulatory compliance, effective budgeting, and strong financial controls to support the organization’s mission and operations.
Some Key Responsibilities
• Maintains the financial records and accounts for the Sudbury Finnish Rest Home Society and its subsidiary companies (i.e. Finlandia Nursing- Home, Finlandia Care Services)
• Supervises the accounts payable, accounts receivable, resident trust, general ledger and payroll services for Finlandia
• Hires, trains and motivates staff
• Conducts performance appraisals and salary reviews
• Prepares financial statements, subsidy claims, funding proposals, investment options and other banking/accounting services
• Prepares year-end financial statements and government reporting requirements. (i.e. Annual Reconciliation Report, Annual Information Return, MIS trial balance submission, other reports as required)
• Approves all cheque runs, cash deposits and payroll deposits
• Responds to public enquiries, complaints, requests and concerns regarding accounting issues
• Prepares annual budgets for all projects
• Deals with financial labour relations issues as they arise with various unions
• Participates in collective bargaining for the renewal of Collective Agreements
• Develops and maintains a thorough working knowledge of the Tenant Protection Act, Social Housing Reform Act, Long Term Care Homes Act and Long-Term Care Facilities Program Manual
• Develops and maintains knowledge of Provincial and Federal operating agreements and housing leases.
• Prepares reporting and statistical information required by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, North East Local Health Integration Network and City of Greater Sudbury-Housing Services
• Develops and maintains a working knowledge of Life Lease Agreement for Rivitalo Townhouses
• Develops and maintains a thorough working knowledge of the Finlandia Village Health and Safety Manual and associated Provincial Legislation
• Develops and maintains a thorough working knowledge of Finlandia’s Resident Safety Policies
• Performs other related duties as required
Qualifications
• Diploma or Degree in a related discipline (e.g.: Business, Commerce) from a recognized Community College or University with Canadian accreditation and an accounting designation such as CPA
• Finnish speaking skill is considered an asset
• An acceptable Police Vulnerable Sector Check verified within the past six months
• 2-step TB test within the past six months
Experience
• Three (3) years of related experience
Knowledge
• Applicable legislation and related regulations
• Best practices within areas of responsibility
• Microcomputer software applications (i.e.: word processing, spreadsheet applications, computerized accounting, etc.) and computerized administrative systems
• Working knowledge of Dynamics Great Plains considered as asset
