Day 1 – Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation x U of A Immersion Program

Today marks the beginning of an incredible 5-day journey at the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation & University of Alberta 2025 Substance Use Disorder Immersion Program in Rancho Mirage, California.

Alongside 13 inspiring classmates and 3 U of A Addiction Medicine Fellows, I’m stepping into one of North America’s leading substance use treatment centers. This is far from your typical classroom. Each day includes over 8 hours of immersive, real-world care—observing and reflecting on the recovery journey alongside patients.

Our afternoons are packed with thought-provoking sessions led by Betty Ford’s expert clinical, medical, and leadership teams. 💡

This program is designed to challenge us emotionally and intellectually—to push us beyond textbooks and into the heart of addiction medicine. I’m incredibly grateful for this opportunity to grow into a pharmacist who supports recovery with empathy, compassion, and evidence-based care.

Today is the day! Our resident pharmacy student (and Jonathan's sister), Samantha Gbedemah, will be heading to California for an exciting placement as part of her 4th year in the Doctor of Pharmacy program at the University of Alberta. 🌟

This is such an incredible opportunity to gain hands-on experience, learn from a new healthcare environment, and continue building her expertise in pharmacy. We are so proud of the dedication and passion she brings to her studies and her future patients. 💊❤️

Jonathan’s Kingsway Pharmacy was honoured to receive the President’s Award at the WholeHealth Pharmacy Partners Awards Gala! 🏆 With over 270 pharmacies in the WholeHealth family across Canada, this national award recognizes an outstanding new pharmacy (open 18 months or less) that exemplifies innovation, a commitment to patient-focused care, and enthusiastic support of banner programs.

To say we’re humbled is an understatement. From Sudbury to Niagara Falls, we are so proud of what we’ve built together – and grateful to have been celebrated on such a grand stage. From the incredible gala venue to the breathtaking sights of Niagara Falls, the weekend was truly unforgettable. 🌊✨
