The first time a client independently uses their AAC device to request something they truly want… and then keeps doing it because they realize:
“My words work.”

No prompting.
No modeling.
Just genuine, purposeful communication.

Watching the excitement, pride, and connection in that moment is something really special. ✨

This is why AAC matters.
This is why we presume competence.
This is why we celebrate every form of communication. 💙

Big exciting news 👏💜

I’m now officially a Certified SPEAK OUT!® Provider through Parkinson Voice Project®!

The SPEAK OUT!® Therapy Program is an evidence-based treatment program designed to help individuals with Parkinson’s and related disorders REGAIN and RETAIN their speech and swallowing by learning to “speak with INTENT.” 🗣️

Parkinson’s can impact voice, speech clarity, facial expression, confidence, and swallowing — but early intervention and consistent support can make such a meaningful difference.

I’m really excited to continue growing Beyond Words North’s adult services and to support more individuals and families living with Parkinson’s across Ontario. 💜✨

This is communication. 💬

Using AAC (Augmentative & Alternative Communication) gives individuals access to language in a way that works for them — whether that’s through symbols, words, or a combination of both.

Research shows that AAC supports language development and does not prevent speech from emerging. In fact, it often helps build it. 🌱
