Are you a neurodivergent adult looking for new ways to connect with yourself and others? Our music therapy and art therapy interns, Andrea and Deb, are joining forces to launch our newest group – Atypical connections, a creative arts therapy group.

In the 8 week online group, you will learn more about and explore topics related to neurodivergence, relationships, and finding belonging. This may include exploring themes of identity, grief, loneliness, societal and familial pressure, and stigma. Throughout the eight weeks, there will be opportunities to connect with others, express yourself, and share in a non-judgemental environment.

You could be a good fit if…

You identify as neurodivergent
You are 18+
You were diagnosed later in life (i.e. past young childhood) or self-diagnosed later in life
You want to connect with others in a group setting
You live in Canada
You would like to find a way to express yourself creatively through the arts.

Ready to get started? Visit the link in our bio or reach out to andrea@kstherapyservices.ca. Know someone who might like this group? Don’t hesitate to spread the word!

Welcome to our series therapy terms we get wrong. Today we’re talking about boundaries. I’ve talked about this before, but boundaries are SO misunderstood, so I had to come back to it for this series.

If you feel like your boundaries aren’t working, it might be because they aren’t boundaries. Boundaries are about what you will do. They are often paired with a request, but don’t have to be. Here are a few examples of boundaries:

I won’t answer if you ask me about this again.

I’m not available to come and help you.

Please stop yelling at me (request), if you don’t, I will hang up the phone (boundary).

The most empowering thing about true boundaries, is that they are within your control to uphold.

Our nervous system favours the familiar. If you’ve been living in constant chaos for years, calm might feel unsafe. If you’ve been chronically depressed, feeling your mood improve may feel unsettling.

We’re wired for safety and survival, so we gravitate towards what we know, not what’s necessarily what is best for us. We can logically understand what's best for us, but not deeply know it to be true. That's a different kind of learning that requires time and consistency in your healing journey. Good therapy with someone you trust can also help a lot with this process.

If healing doesn’t feel like you thought it would, this might be why. Try to be patient with yourself and the process. Try not to be scared off by the discomfort that comes with growth. We can relearn what safety means.

People often say “I’ll feel better when…” and name all the external things that will change the way they feel. Sometimes this is true. For example, students in exam season right now probably will feel a lot better after exams are done.

That being said, sometimes this mindset keeps us stuck. Especially with anxiety and perfectionism, what we’re stressed or anxious about becomes a moving target (or a “whack a mole” as I like to tell my clients). Once one stressor is resolved, we find something else to feel anxious about. We keep looking to resolve external stressors as the solution to our anxiety, but it doesn’t work.

Often the key to breaking the cycle is to look inward. It could look like shifting your relationship with anxiety itself and doing deeper work to understand why these patterns persist. Want to get started with a therapist that can help you with your anxiety and perfectionism? Book a matching consultation in our bio!

Do you ever get frustrated at yourself for doing things that you know aren't good for you? (I'm going to guess yes, because you're a human).

Although it might feel counterintuitive, recognizing and honouring how we cope can be an important part in shifting away from them.

Welcome to our newest series – therapy terms we get wrong. Today we’re talking about codependency. This term codependent is used all the time, but often with different intentions and meanings. This leads to miscommunications and misunderstandings.

Let’s clear up what we mean in therapy when we talk about codependency. It refers to a dynamic where there is an over-functioner and under-functioner. Watch the video to learn more!

Therapists hear the phrase "protecting my peace" used all the time. Do I think it can be important to do this? Yes. Do I also think it gets misused all the time? Absolutely.

Its often used to enable ourselves to avoid, skip out on the hard stuff, and keep our world smaller.

Welcome!

My name is Kathleen and I am a Registered Psychotherapist and Accredited Music Therapist. If you are here, perhaps you are looking for support in navigating life's roadblocks, seemingly big or small. I believe that everyone has the strengths and resources to create change and healing in their own life. In my work, I use a holistic and strengths-based approach to promote psychological, emotional, and spiritual well-being. This means that we use your own strengths and abilities to work towards making positive change and becoming the fullest version of yourself.

As an Accredited Music Therapist, I am trained to use music in all forms in psychotherapy sessions. This could include listening, making, or creating music. How we choose to incorporate music depends on your strengths, interests and goals. For many people, music is already important for well-being. Music psychotherapy provides an opportunity to bring music's inherent therapeutic power into sessions! There is no musical background necessary to benefit from services.

I specialize in working with teenagers and adults looking to better their mental health and well-being. My clinical experience includes work in mental health care across the lifespan, and in dementia care. I have experience working with individuals with a wide range of mental health issues including mood and anxiety disorders, eating disorders and, post-traumatic stress disorder. In addition to being the owner and lead therapist at KS Therapy Services, I work in the Child and Adolescent Mental Health program at Grand River Hospital.

Thanks for stopping by! If you would like to learn more, feel free to check out the my website or book a free initial consultation.
