One down and three to go 😉 It’s that time of year when horses can look like they’re at 8 weeks when they’re actually at 6 weeks! The combination of the heat and humidity with strong grass results in accelerated hoof growth over the summer months.

First shoeing vs fourth shoeing: No more under-run heels. I’m not as concerned with the specific numerical value as I am that all angles are the same numerical value. The first pic shows the first set of shoes applied to a miniature sport pony; as you can see the angle of the heels does not match the angle of the dorsal wall. When the heels are at a more acute angle than the dorsal wall they are referred to as “under run”. Through correctively addressing the toe length and adequately supporting the caudal portion of the hoof we have been able to achieve heels that have the same angle of the dorsal wall and overall hoof capsule 👍

Spooned heels, like so many other modifications, do have a time and place and when applied with care can be an effective help in preventing sprung heels and lost shoes.
