LOOKING FOR DOGS: One of the most common heart diseases in dogs is dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). While DCM is primarily caused by genetics, nutritionally-mediated DCM, and its association with grain-free dog diets has been a recent focus in veterinary medicine.

Some dogs eating grain-free diets will develop DCM, while others remain healthy. Dr Shari Raheb and her team are exploring the link between grain-free diets and cardiac dysfunction in this study funded by OVC Pet Trust.

We are looking for two groups of participants that have been eating the same grain-free kibble diet for more than 6 months.
1. Healthy dogs
2. Dogs with suspected cardiac dysfunction

Doberman, Boxer, Irish Wolfhound, Newfoundland, Great Dane, Cocker Spaniel, Portuguese Water Dogs, and/or dogs with comorbidities and/or on cardiac medications will be unable to participate.

If this sounds like your dog or a dog you know, we would love to speak with you about our Cardiology study. Send us a DM or email ovc.clinicaltrials@uoguelph.ca

Financial incentives are available for eligible participants.

Full study details are available on our website (link in bio). ➡️

LOOKING FOR DOGS: Like people, pets can have seizures and be diagnosed with Epilepsy. Approximately 1 in 20 dogs will experience a seizure in their lifetime. Seizures can be quite scary and there are many different kinds and causes! It’s important to identify the type of seizure for successful treatment and management.

Dr Fiona James and her research team use electroencephalography (EEG) to confirm if seizure activity is happening, as well as the type and frequency of seizures.

Pictured here is Walter, a recent OVC Clinical Trials Superhero! He is wearing his EEG head gear and harness - doesn’t he look so handsome!?! 😍

By participating, you and your dog can join Walter in improving our understanding of canine epilepsy and contribute to the advancement of veterinary medicine.

Comment ‘EPILEPSY’ below and we will send you the link to our recruiting EEG-focused seizure studies! 🧠

LOOKING FOR VETERINARIANS: Join us as we explore new ways to care for our veterinary patients and the people who love them!

Dr Shane Bateman and graduate student Dr Sara Ritzie (DVSc) are inviting veterinarians to participate in a research study assessing the impact of a novel Spectrum of Care Workshop.

Do you ever encounter clients who are unable or unwilling to pay for a plan of care you recommend?

Do you experience negative emotions when you are unable to provide appropriate care to patients due to obstacles?

Would you like to learn ways to help your patients and support clients facing financial barriers without having to discount services or lose money?

If you answered yes, this study may be for you! The 4-hour workshop with group discussions and case-based learning will provide a practical framework and introduce effective communication skills needed when working in underserved communities, sustainable financial models of care, and strategies to ensure practitioners can concurrently focus on their own wellbeing and mental health.

Workshops will begin in August 2024. For more information, send us a DM or contact our clinical trials team via email (ovc.clinicaltrials@uoguelph.ca). Link to register: https://forms.office.com/r/yGBB0YsWBB

LOOKING FOR PARTICIPANTS: Melanoma is the most common oral tumour in dogs.

This cancer can be very aggressive locally throughout the oral cavity including bone. It is also highly metastatic and quickly spreads to other areas of the body (lymph nodes, lungs, etc) in about 80% of dogs. In some cases, even with aggressive therapy, survival times can be as little as 6 months.

Dr Anthony Mutsaers and graduate student Dr Gabriella Allegrini are investigating an alternative drug therapy for oral melanoma in dogs. They hope that when other treatments have failed, or if traditional therapy is declined, the use of Palladia may give families more time with their beloved dogs.

Palladia is a type of drug originally used to treat recurrent mast cell tumours in dogs. New evidence has shown that Palladia may be useful for treating other cancer types.

We are looking for dogs with a confirmed diagnosis of an oral melanoma to participate in this study.

If this sounds like your dog or a dog you know, we would love to speak with you about our canine oncology study.

Full study details are available on our website: https://ovcclinicaltrials.uoguelph.ca/

This study is generously supported by OVC Pet Trust and financial incentives are available for eligible participants. ➡️

LOOKING FOR PARTICIPANTS: Although thyroid tumours are relatively uncommon in dogs, they present an opportunity to evaluate a new nanoparticle and laser treatment for both dogs and humans.

This innovative ‘seek and destroy’ alternative to cancer surgery is currently being tested at OVC by Dr Michelle Oblak, OVC surgical oncologist, and her collaborators UHN researchers, including head and neck surgeon Dr. Jonathan Irish and Dr. Gang Zheng, the inventor of this technology.

We are looking for dogs with a confirmed diagnosis of a thyroid tumour to participate in this fully funded study.

Join Miya, pictured here with Clinical Trials RVT Natalie and Research Manager Charly, in advancing animal and human healthcare! You can read more about the study on our website and her story in the UofG News Release or OVC Pet Trust Best Friends magazine – links below. ➡️

LOOKING FOR PARTICIPANTS: Equine synovitis is a painful condition that is challenging to manage due to inferior quality repair tissue.

Mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) therapy, using umbilical cord blood, shows promise in reducing inflammation and preventing further tissue degeneration.

In previous studies, Dr Judith Koenig and her team have shown that MSCs are a promising option for joint injury management in horses. Building on this research, the team wants to evaluate the best preparation for this therapeutic.

Dr Koenig has a passion for horses and sports medicine; not only will this research impact horses but it may also be applicable for translation to human health.

We are looking for horses with a confirmed diagnosis of synovitis/osteoarthritis of the fetlock or carpus.

If this sounds like your horse or a horse you know, we would love to speak with you about our large animal study.

Financial incentives are available. Full study details are available on our website:https://bpb-ca-c1.wpmucdn.com/sites.uoguelph.ca/dist/1/292/files/2024/03/Koenig_SynovitisOA_AODA-23c64ea6c7192cd9.pdf
