The time has come for me to embark on a new journey! I will greatly miss my Zehrs team and all of you that made my time here so special 💗

I am so excited to introduce my friend and colleague Olivia McAllister, RD Olivia M., Your Dietitian at Zehrs as the interim Dietitian for Zehrs Imperial and Zehrs Fergus!

Greek Farro Salad 🥗
1 pkg (225 g) PC Blue Menu Italian Farro Precooked Spelt
1/2 cup (125 mL) thinly sliced red onion
Pinch each salt and granulated sugar
2 tbsp (25 mL) red wine vinegar
1 pkg (340 g) PC Cocktail Tomatoes, each cut in eight wedges
Half sweet red pepper, chopped
1/3 cup (75 mL) each chopped fresh coriander and mint
1/3 cup (75 mL) chopped green onion
1/3 cup (75 mL) crumbled drained PC Light Feta Cheese in Brine
3 tbsp (45 mL) pitted and chopped black olives
2 tbsp (25 mL) pumpkin seeds
 
1. Bring 1 cup (250 mL) water to a boil in small saucepan. Stir in farro; reduce heat to low and simmer, covered, for 10 minutes. Remove from heat; drain. Let stand, covered, for 5 minutes. Fluff with fork; transfer to large bowl.
2. Meanwhile, combine red onion, salt, sugar and vinegar in small bowl. Let stand for 15 minutes.
3. Stir red onion mixture into farro. Stir in tomatoes, red pepper, coriander, mint, green onion, cheese, olives and pumpkin seeds.

The Mediterranean Diet is based on the traditional foods and eating patterns from countries that surround the Mediterranean Sea such as Italy, Greece, Spain and Malta just to name a few!

The Med Diet is not another fad diet, but a lifestyle and eating pattern that has been researched and has proven health benefits for:

🩸 Diabetes
🎗 Cancer
🧠 Mental and Brain Health

It encompasses a whole lifestyle approach that emphasizes plant based foods and healthy fats, along with lifestyle habits like eating together!

The following tips can help you get started!
1. Eat whole grains, fruit, vegetables, beans, herbs, spices and healthy fats daily!
2. Have fish and seafood twice a week!
3. Include yogurt, cheese, poultry and eggs in moderate portions
4. Limit meats and sweets
5. Share meals at a table with family and friends

Are you a fan of fruit roll ups?
Fruit roll ups are a delicious and perfect on-the-go snack that can be easily made at home. With our blueberries in season, it's the perfect moment to make your own Blueberry and lime roll up!
1. In a blender, puree 2 cups of fresh blueberries with the juice and zest of ½ lime, and 1 tbsp of maple syrup.
2. Put the puree in a small pot and bring to a boil. Let it simmer for about 10-15 minutes, or until it reduces by 1/3. Add 2 tbsp of chia seeds and mix.
3. Preheat the oven to 200F.
4. Using a spoon, spread evenly the blueberry mixture on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper (about ¼ inch thick).
5. Bake for about 2 hours, or until the mixture is dry and not sticky.
6. Let it cool and cut in wide strips with clean scissors.

Nothing says summer like grills and skewers! If you're a seafood lover, whip up some Grilled Shrimp & Veggie Skewers for a light, summery meal.

Makes 4 skewers:
• 1 pound raw shrimp, peeled and deveined
• 1 pint cherry tomatoes
• 1 medium zucchini, chopped into large chunks
• 2 tablespoons olive oil
• 2 tablespoons lemon juice
• Salt & pepper to taste

1. Thread the shrimp, tomatoes, and zucchini on skewers. Set the prepared skewers on a large plate or baking sheet.
2. Mix olive oil, lemon juice, salt, and pepper in a small bowl, then drizzle over the skewers. Also feel free to include any seasoning on top.
3. Grill the skewers for 3-5 minutes on each side, until shrimp is opaque and veggies begin to soften.
4. Serve atop whole grains, such as cooked orzo mixed with grated parmesan.

Have you ever tried freeze-dried fruits ?

This dehydration process happens at a very low temperature, leading to a super crispy result!

Delicious fruit “chips” with no added sugar or preservatives, these are a delicious, nutritious and easy-to-pack snack.

Try adding them to cereal and milk, pairing with some cheese cubes, or mixing into a trail mix with some nuts for extra protein.

You'll find different freeze-dried fruits in the aisles including grape, mango, banana, strawberry and blueberry.

We couldn't have done it without you...⁠

Thank you so much to everyone who showed their support and helped Team Zehrs raise $3360 for the Canadian Mental Health Association during the Ride Don't Hide event in June!!!⁠

Every $330 raised helps CMHA get one more person the help they need sooner and reduce pressure on a health care system already hit hard by COVID-19. ⁠

This means 10+ people will get the help they need thanks to this money. We even beat our $3300 goal!⁠

We had such an amazing time connecting with our community, fundraising, and doing something amazing for our own mental health by completing the exercise goals during the month of June.⁠

I also want to announce the winners of the Wellness Challenges. Congratulations to winners Sarah Skwira and Melanie from Zehrs Fergus and thank you for submitting your awesome challenge photos! I will get in touch to give you your prize (a self care themed gift basket).⁠
