Owned by Cayla Smith, a Certified Equine Massage Therapist (EMT) and Photographer. Currently working in the Standardbred Breeding & Horse Racing industry.

Experience: Grew up riding and competing competitively in the English discipline. I have gained a vast amount of knowledge and experience with horses. Education: Diploma with Distinction in Equine Massage Therapy. Graduate at Trios College/ D’Arcy Lane Institute, in London, Ontario (Canada). Extensive education in physiology, anatomy, pathogenesis, behaviour, confirmation, and kinesiology of horses. Hands-on training in theory and techniques for massage, hydrotherapies, remedial exercises, joint range of motion, stretching, gait analysis for horses. I have written my Board Exam’s, through the International Federation of Registered Equine Massage Therapists (IFREMT). After completing 100 hours of “externship hours”, I will become an official Registered Equine Massage Therapist. This is the highest acknowledged accreditation for my profession.

Did you know? 💡Some horse love Black Liquorice 😍
That black, rubbery candy that some people love and some people hate… obviously the sugary candy must be fed in moderation to your horse. But what you may not know is that liquorice can keep your horse’s digestive track happy and healthy.
Liquorice offers antioxidant properties and cardiovascular benefits along with support in the GI tract by lowering gastric secretions.

Just like alfalfa, the liquorice plant is a legume and closely related to peas! The liquorice plant has many benefits - natural anti-inflammatory and anti-ulcerogenic properties that could act as a natural alternative to medications such as cortisone.

Now most people wouldn’t think of a horse enjoying the taste of licorice, but go ahead and ask their opinion. They do enjoy it and most horses will seek it out.

Muscle Monday
Subclavius 💪🏼
- Supports the shoulder joint and therefore becomes very tight if the shoulder is restricted.
- The horse does not have a collar bone like Humans. Their shoulder is attached via soft tissue.

Location:
ORIGIN: 2nd - 4th costal cartilage, passing over the shoulder joint.
INSERTION: Aponeurosis of the supraspinous muscle.

Purpose/ Action:
- Part of the Thoracic Sling (involved in the suspension and stabilization of the trunk)

Issue Indicators:
- Shortened stride in forelimb
- Pain or horse moves away from you if palpating the front part of the scapula.
- Exercises and disciplines which involve a lot of loading onto the forelimb will exacerbate the discomfort in this area and issues will become more noticeable.
