The sound of an animal friend breathing, purring, blowing steamy breaths out through large horsey nostrils, can cause our nervous systems to settle and find a place to rest. Ken and I are blessed to have the best breathing teacher living with us. Even her loud snoring is luxuriously calming.

Lately I've found myself mesmerized by the birds at the feeder. In the same way, watching the finches has a pleasant effect on my mood. Why is this? I wonder if it's because I've contributed to their well-fare, an indication of how my actions have an influence on the world. Or maybe it's santosha, a feeling of contentment when our inner state is in attunement with the outer state of the natural world.

Contentment and calm can also come about when we rest in the natural rhythms of our own breath. This is what we learn through practice.
