❄️ Winter in southern Ontario is full of hard to navigate environmental conditions. Heavy snows, slick ice, freezing rain and endless slush. Staying safe when walking outside starts with these easy steps:
1) Wear footwear that is insulated, well-fitted, waterproof and have a thick sturdy sole designed for cold winter wear.
2) Use ice grips on shoes or walking poles if there is a chance of ice or uneven ground. 🥾
3) Stay alert and look ahead for possible risks. 👀
4) Walk like a penguin by keeping your arms free for balance and shuffling in small, short steps. 🚶

Need help getting tasks done around the home or making trips outside of the house? Right at Home caregivers here to help make daily tasks like laundry, groceries and winter strolls that much easier.

If your loved one who is living with dementia feels disoriented and wanders around the home, there are subtle ways you can help them navigate better in the home.

- Make sure areas are well-lit 💡
- Label doors like the pantry, their bedroom or the bathroom 🏷️
- Keep familiar objects and furniture to make rooms feel more comforting 🛋️
- Reduce clutter that can make the areas feel distracting 🛍️

Greetings, Thoughtful Thursday Friends.
Happy New Year!

I hope everyone had a delightfully-wonderful holiday.

We are back in the saddle again, and happy to have our Thoughtful Thursdays back.
So I thought in keeping with this most wintry season, because it is our theme for January at the SCE, and because we have a beautiful Grand Prize - a $75 Gift Certificate for a Spa or Salon or Barber of choice, we would continue to pursue more Hygge and Koselig moments!

As a bit of a refresher, while both hygge (Danish) and koselig (Norwegian) mean cozy and comfortable, hygge often focuses on intimate, indoor solitude with candles and blankets, whereas koselig emphasizes communal warmth and togetherness, frequently embracing the outdoors and nature.

Joanne Wiersma, our Hygge & Koselig friend and expert, is going to be joining us on ZOOM next week to speak about these experiences (ask for the link if you might like to join us!) plus she is going to be sharing an in person afternoon with us where we will experience Hygge first hand (ask us how to sign up for that if you want to experience it in person!) Joanne lent me a Hygge "game" to look at and it involves the asking of certain questions. For our January Thoughtful Thursday, I am going to use a card from this game because, perfectly, each has one has three conversation starter questions!

Here we go:
1. What two things would you grab if your house were on fire (we will assume the family and pets are okay).
2. Who is the most interesting person you have ever met?
3. Describe a time when your first impression of a person was completely wrong?

Okay, friends. In case you need a bit of a refresher of the "rules", here they are:

a. Respond to the questions above in the comments section below
b. Deadline to enter is 8pm this evening.
c. One entry per week.
d. Draw will be made on the evening of Thursday, January 29
*****************************
It's just that easy. Your name will be entered on our Wheel of Names and you will have a chance to win a lovely $75 Gift Certificate from a Salon, Barber, or Spa of YOUR choice.

“Blue Monday” is just around the corner and with that is a reminder that sadness and loneliness can get to us all - especially at this time of year. Socializing and connecting with others has proven to be great for combatting the blues.

Some great ways to kick loneliness to the curb include:
👟 Visit your local community gyms and wellness centres
💁 Volunteer in the community
🗓️ Invite someone along to an event or errand
