🦷 Brushing Along the Gumline: Why It’s Important

The gumline is one of the most common places for plaque bacteria to accumulate. This is because the small space where the tooth meets the gum creates an ideal environment for bacteria to collect.

When plaque is left along the gumline, it can irritate the gums and cause gingivitis, the earliest stage of gum disease. Signs of gingivitis may include:
• Bleeding when brushing or flossing
• Red or swollen gums
• Tender gum tissue

If plaque continues to build up, it can harden into tartar, which may contribute to more advanced gum disease if not treated.

✨ Proper brushing technique:
To effectively remove plaque from the gumline, place your toothbrush at a 45° angle toward the gums so the bristles reach both the edge of the gums and the tooth surface.

Use gentle circular motions to loosen and remove plaque while avoiding excessive pressure that could irritate the gums.

Maintaining good brushing technique helps keep both your teeth and gums healthy.

🦷 Dental Cleaning (Scaling) vs Recall Exam — What’s the Difference?

These are two different parts of your dental visit, and each plays an important role in maintaining your oral health.

✨ Dental Cleaning (Scaling)
Performed by a dental hygienist to remove plaque and hardened tartar (calculus) from your teeth and along the gumline. This buildup cannot be removed by brushing or flossing alone.

Regular cleanings help:
• Prevent cavities
• Reduce the risk of gum disease
• Remove stains and plaque buildup
• Keep your teeth and gums healthy

🔍 Recall Exam
Performed by the dentist, the recall exam is a routine check to monitor your oral health over time and ensure everything is still healthy since your last visit.

During a recall exam, the dentist checks for:
• Cavities or early tooth decay
• Changes in gum health
• Problems with existing fillings, crowns, or restorations
• Bite or jaw concerns
• Signs of infection or abnormalities
• Oral cancer screening

The purpose of the recall exam is to identify any concerns early before they become bigger problems.

A recall exam is done at regular intervals (usually every 6 months) so your dentist can review your oral health, monitor any changes, and catch potential issues early.
