When Michelle collapsed at home, her neighbour called 9-1-1 and Guelph-Wellington Paramedics brought her to GGH, where the ED team confirmed she was having a stroke. She was moved to the dedicated stroke unit that opened last year and was created to co-locate patients with similar needs. The unit now accommodates up to 12 beds, improving coordinated stroke care.

". . . By having a dedicated area and a skilled team focused on stroke recovery, we can ensure that patients receive faster assessments, targeted treatments, and personalized rehabilitation planning, giving them the best chance at a strong recovery," shared Harpreet, a registered practical nurse in the stroke unit.

Michelle's nephew, Johnathan, was by her side throughout her stay, witnessing firsthand the compassionate and expert care provided by the team.

He shared; "The team has been so personable and has taken the time to explain her new medications and what the next steps in her recovery will be. That level of communication and support has made all the difference for us."

After a three-day stay at GGH, Michelle was safely discharged and completes rehabilitation at St. Joseph's Health Centre and Foundation Guelph.

Emily, GGH’s director of medicine and stroke care, highlighted the strength of local partnerships: “Our community is incredibly fortunate to have a seamless, coordinated response to stroke care ... This system-wide approach ensures patients receive life-saving treatment and compassionate care every step of the way.”

In case you missed it: We’re making great strides in transforming our facilities! The location of the ambulance bay is being prepared, while updated spaces for our Short Stay Assessment Unit and Mental Health and Addictions Emergency Follow-up Services are beginning to take shape.

The main lobby now features modern public restrooms. Work will soon begin on a modernized Laboratory Medicine department, and improvements continue at our community-based medical centre at Conestoga College.

These transformational projects are made possible thanks to the provincial government, The Foundation of Guelph General Hospital, and this community. We are making great strides in building a healthier future.
