The other day I was chatting with a patient who told me their foot hurt every time they got up off the floor. I asked if they had tried a different way of getting up so it didn’t trigger the pain. Their answer? “No… I’ve been stubborn.”

Because they kept moving the same way, they kept triggering the same pain… and growing more and more annoyed.

It made me think of something from my own life. After I had my daughter, my body shape changed. But for months, I kept trying to squeeze into my old university jean shorts. And every time I put them on, I instantly felt frustrated with myself. Eventually, I realized the problem wasn’t my body — it was that I was setting my body up for failure by trying to make it do something that didn’t work right now.

The solution? Buying a bigger pair of shorts that made me feel comfortable and let me move forward and enjoy life again.

Pain works the same way. Sometimes the best thing you can do is shift the way you’re moving, just for a while, to break the pain cycle. It doesn’t mean you’ll be stuck doing things differently forever — it just gives your body the chance it needs to heal.

✨ Sometimes the “easiest way” really is the smartest way.

A low rumble gives way to a deafening roar
A shockwave that sparks realization; that isn’t the sound of construction,

It’s a home performing a disappearing act.
An illusion; my eyes playing tricks on me until that void becomes a fireball, evidence that this is real.

Footsteps pounding pavement,
breath in my ears.

Time is a construct because it pauses in the space between the place where I started and the place where I end up. It must still be paused because we arrive and the world is still, save from our bodies and the blaze.

And that’s when we see him; amongst the wreckage and the devastation, we see him, and he, like us, is a body in motion.

It’s a race and the three of us are positioned at the starting line. But the pistol fires and only two people take off.

On the outside, I am the bystander.

The driver in me urges my body forward, commanding “there is a life to save,”

But I am anchored in place by the little voice inside of me that whispers “I am here too Mama. Please keep me safe.”

There is no choice without a cost.

And so we hold the line.

I am The Bystander, but not frozen from apathy.

The Bystander surveying the scene for signs of other bodies in motion.

The Bystander protecting a precious life not yet lived.

The Bystander staying rooted when everything in her wants to run toward.

Time resumes and the last of the flames are drowned out.

There are handshakes for heroes, and backs angled toward bystanders. Our version is quieter but we are the keepers of this part of the story.

We later learn that not all lives can be saved.

It feels like guilt, and it feels like failure, and it feels like humanity and it feels like care.

This is the tug-of-war of survival.

Emotional entanglement and a desperation to make meaning out of chaos.

Hypervigilance and a sea of tears and the deepest form of love and connection.

Healing hands on my belly and a little voice that whispers “Thank you. I’m still here mama. You were brave too.”

Hi! I’m Kirstie 👋
If we haven’t already met — I’m a chiropractor, yoga teacher, and best-selling author based in Guelph.

I’m a big believer in the power of the mind-body connection.

Practices like yoga, movement, meditation, and breathwork can help us feel better in both body and mind.

But I know it can feel hard to know where to start — especially when life is busy or you’re feeling stuck in old patterns.

That’s why I created the Guelph Yoga & Wellness Festival — a space where you can reconnect with yourself, move your body, and fill your cup.

We’re gathering this Sunday, June 22 — for a full day of yoga + movement classes, wellness workshops, local vendors, and community connection.

✨ Ticket sales close THIS Friday at midnight!

If you’ve been craving a reset — or just some time for YOU — don’t wait.

Here’s the truth about healing… 🚨👇

There’s a common myth that healing is a straightforward, linear process – that every day, pain should get a little better than the day before. In reality, these two patterns are far more common:

1️⃣ Ups and Downs: Healing often looks like a series of ups and downs with an overall upward trajectory. One day might be really tough, but a few days later, you could be feeling 90% better, only to experience another dip. It’s important to measure progress over weeks, not days, because daily variations are normal but over the course of weeks you should notice less frequent pain, less intense pain or pain that does not last as long once it comes on.

2️⃣ The Plateau of Latent Potential: Sometimes, it feels like nothing is changing initially, which can be frustrating, especially if you’re doing all the right things! Here’s the secret… if what you’re doing isn’t making things worse, keep going! Sometimes, it simply takes time, and once that change starts, improvement can happen quickly.

Healing pain, especially pain that has been present for months or years, is a journey not a race. In general, we expect a trend of improvement over the first 4-6 treatments or 4-6 weeks of beginning a treatment plan.

Part of my role as your healthcare provider is to help you set realistic expectations and goals for your recovery and to provide reassurance that you are doing the right things and you are on the right track!

If this sounds like the right kind of care for you, I would love to work with you; click the link in my bio and select “book an appointment” to get started.

A Mind-Body Approach to Wellness

Dr. Griffiths is a Chiropractor and Yoga Teacher, practicing in Guelph, Ontario. Dr. Griffiths’ undergraduate academic journey began at the University of Guelph where she majored in Biomedical Science. In her fourth year of the program, she completed research under Professor and Chiropractor Dr. John Srbely, investigating pain patterns in patients diagnosed with chronic pain. This led Dr. Griffiths to developing a particular interest in assessing and treating chronic pain. She went on to complete her Doctor of Chiropractic degree, graduating Summa Cum Laude from the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College.

In 2016, Kirstie embarked on a one-month intensive Yoga Teacher Training program in Nicaragua where she acquired her 200-Hour level certification. She currently offers yoga classes publicly at the University of Guelph, Movati Athletic, and LOYOBO Fit. Dr. Griffiths offers a yoga therapy program for low back pain that combines education, movement, and meditation that is specific to back pain. These in-person programs are offered as a chiropractic service and are eligible for coverage through extended health benefits. This program is also available in an online format.

Dr. Griffiths holds a certification in Mental Health First Aid. As a health care provider, Dr. Griffiths values an integrative model of care that is evidence-based, and emphasizes the mind-body connection and the role it plays in wellness. As a chiropractor, Dr. Griffiths offers hands on, multi-modal treatment to ease pain and improve function, and incorporates physical rehabilitation and yoga therapy in patient care. She also offers customized coaching on lifestyle factors that play a role in health including diet, nutrition and exercise, and provides a safe space to discuss goals, stressors, and strategies to overcome obstacles to wellness.
