I have a really hard time with superficial people. You know, the kind who are all about appearances, and care more about image and things rather than how they treat others. I believe superficiality justifies a lot of horrific things that go on in the world.

A heart leader expresses themselves for the greater good. And you don’t have to be a superstar to do that. Bad Bunny showed that simply existing makes you part of humanity’s equation. All you need to do is participate in and care about the community.

This is just like Reyna, the main character in my children’s book, The Stellar Queen of Oaxaca. The book is based on a woman I met in Oaxaca City — a single mother born visually impaired, from a family who panhandled to survive. I helped Reyna learn English by braille, and she taught me to see with my heart. She was my heart leader.

I wrote this book because I wanted children and parents to know heart leaders are everywhere — not just on stages, but in our communities.

In the story, Reyna declares “Close Your Eyes, Open Your Heart Day,” and readers get a taste of Mexican culture’s beauty. I don’t know where the real Reyna is now. But sharing her story honors what she taught me and gives back to the community that shaped us.
