My first Marketing job right out of University was at a Fair Trade Coffee Roastery/Cafe. Yes, oh so 90's hipster (and I used to work at a video store, too!).

I was hired to help raise their brand awareness (aka get the word out about their coffee and the whole concept of fair trade).

Given that this was a small, idealistic startup, I was also asked to serve tables, roast coffee and be a barista. My favourite thing to do was roast coffee late at night when no one was around. I got to read poetry and Latin American political works while the beans churned in the roasting oven.

Yes, back then I was willing to get paid the equivalent of $2/hour in order to save the world and be part of a solution for the planet.

That job not only taught me how to be a coffee snob, but also about the power of food politics, how the local economy can make a difference in the global economy, and how marketing with heart can spread the word about good works.

It makes me smile to know that most people now have heard about Fair Trade practices and freshly roasted coffee. Even big name companies have moved towards ethically-sourced coffee. I was part of something good that impacted the greater cultural landscape.

Even though I'm not in that field now, I am grateful for how that job shaped me, my values and how I do business. It even inspired me to travel to Mexico twice and to learn Spanish through cultural immersion.

It's also why I love helping good hearts thrive in life and biz. Because I believe everything starts with our hearts and either works to heal or hurt the world.

If you're looking for a biz mentor to encourage you to grow, have your back and create a business plan that puts heart into the bottom line, then let's chat: https://lnkd.in/gEMTCF72

Do you have a vision statement for your life? How about for your business?

A vision statement is the guiding light -- the north star -- the keeps you focused and aligned when you're feeling overwhelmed or confused about what choices to make.

With so much noise to distract you, and messages that say you're not enough, it is important to know what you or your biz stands for -- what you're trying to bring into the world.

My personal statement is: "To be an authentic and compassionate presence, writer and solopreneur who lives simply and inspires others to do the same."

The Vision Statement for Confident Soul-utions is "to be a soul sanctuary for good hearts to thrive -- in life and biz."

What's yours?

This past winter, I found myself crouched over in bed, clutching my belly in excruciating pain. I couldn’t even walk down a flight of stairs. At the time, I didn’t realize I was about to learn a profound spiritual lesson: that angels really do have my back.

Just cause the world is afraid of your gifts, doesn't mean aren't good at what you do.

Just cause the world is afraid of your gifts, doesn't mean aren't good at what you do.

It took just seven pitches.

On this day in 1931, a 17-year-old girl named Jackie Mitchell took the mound against the New York Yankees.

First up: Babe Ruth. He swung and missed at her signature drop pitch. Twice. Then watched a third strike go by. He threw his bat in disgust.

Next up: Lou Gehrig, the 'Iron Horse.' He swung and missed three straight times.
In seven pitches, a teenage girl had fanned two of the most fearsome hitters in history.

But instead of being celebrated, she was banned. Days later, the baseball commissioner voided her contract, claiming the sport was 'too strenuous' for a woman.

They didn't ban her because she was weak. They banned her because she was powerful.

And her story is a timeless lesson: Sometimes, the world will tell you to sit down, precisely because it's afraid of what will happen when you stand up.

Self-love isn’t always soft baths and candles.

Sometimes it’s setting boundaries. Saying no. Telling yourself the truth about what hurts.

And then choosing to still reach for joy.

🌸 How are you nurturing yourself today — even just a little?

In this day and age, where we are seeing people abuse their power without consequences, and "successful" folks showing up in a self-centred and socially irresponsible manner, it is easy to believe that empowerment means being entitled and treating others with indifferent cruelty.

The truth is that real empowerment -- power from within -- comes from a place of deep sensitivity, compassion and self-awareness. It means considering oneself as well as others, and to own your limits, perceptions and choices.

It can mean raising your standards, and advocating for yourself in order to be treated with humane consideration. It doesn't mean you can treat another being poorly just for your own sense of "deservingness".

And no, you're not meant to be a doormat. You need to take up some space because you matter and so does the other person, animal or plant. We all have a right to exist together.

Living consciously and with heart is hard. There are so many ways to trip up.

Yet our conditioning can program us to either be too special or not special enough.

It takes inner work, self-reflection and getting real with ourselves to make authentic choices that lead to real empowerment which includes the voice and needs of others.

🌼 You Made It to Friday!

This week may have asked a lot of you — emotionally, mentally, even spiritually. It's time to take some deep breaths and acknowledge all you have accomplished, even if you're feeling drained.

What if joy didn’t have to wait for the weekend or for “some other day”? What if you could feel a glimmer of it today, even in the middle of the stress and mess?

That’s one of the things that I help empathetic women discover — how to reclaim genuine, real joy through balanced and authentic choices, so they don't have to grin and bear it and pretend everything’s fine.

Do you ever feel like joy is something other people get to have… but for you, it feels just out of reach?

When we grow up learning to put others first, we often lose touch with what actually brings us joy.

👉 Try this: Take 3 minutes today and ask yourself, What lights me up — even a little?

Then honor it, no matter how small. That’s a way back to your heart.
